We used the text to introduce skills like identifying central ideas, analyzing character development, making text-to-world connections, and writing argumentative essays based on real-world solutions.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom looks active and collaborative. Students hold thoughtful discussions, annotate texts (since this book was theirs to keep, they were super excited to write directly in their novel!), and often move from reading into research and hands-on application. This book sparked some engaging conversations around global challenges and renewable energy.\r\n\r\nA number of students were especially inspired by William Kamkwamba's creativity and determination. They loved brainstorming ways our own school could implement renewable energy solutions like solar panels, rain powered gardens, wind powered air conditioning, or bike-powered charging stations. We even took a field trip to the Atlantic County Utilities Authority to see wind turbines and learn about sustainable systems in action. It was incredible to watch students connect the book to real-life innovation and imagine how they, too, could make an impact.","fullyFundedDate":1742921648750,"projectUrl":"project/winds-of-change-empowering-minds-throu/8981756/","projectTitle":"\"Winds of Change: Empowering Minds Through Innovation\"","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Futty","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4646943_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1502675496702","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4646943"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_55802","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":312,"numTeachers":27,"percentFrplEligible":8,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":81,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":11,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"5 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"11.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":37.5,"schoolId":55802,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Indian Mills Memorial School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Indian Mills Memorial School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-jersey/shamong-township-school-district/indian-mills-memorial-school/55802"}
