I teach science to inner city high school students and I am an advisor for the crochet club. Students in the inner city have a unique high school experience and often need to deal with stress and life events that are difficult. \r\nMany of my students have trouble dealing with daily stress and often it builds until it's released in an inappropriate manner. I think that these behavior issues can be avoided by teaching students ways to recognize and deal with their stress before it overflows inappropriately. By introducing and teaching students to crochet they can relieve stress and be productive at the same time. Crochet has a rythmic motion that can calm and soothe a person. The hook and yarn need to be held gently in the hand to work properly. These two functions work to calm and redirect stress . The final piece of the equation to reduce stress is the fact that there are no plugs, chargers, beeps, swipes or technology involved . Not only can the parchment paper keep the vinyl from melting onto the heat press, the students now understand there are baking options. \r\nIt was great to watch the students have options and make their own shirts. Some students loved to weed the vinyl others just liked the outcome.
