Your generosity is already making an impact, and I'm excited to share how we've begun using the new resources. Please feel free to share this project with others who may be interested in supporting our mission!\r\n\r\nThe items from this project have transformed our counseling office from a basic workspace into a warm, welcoming environment where students feel comfortable opening up. The soft lighting, plants, organized shelves, and comfortable seating have helped create a space that feels more like a living room than an office. Students are using this space during academic planning sessions, wellness check-ins, and conversations about their personal and post-secondary goals.\r\n\r\nOne meaningful moment happened during a meeting with a new student who had just transferred to our school. He walked in visibly anxious, but after settling into the comfortable chair and noticing the soft lighting and calm atmosphere, he said, \"This actually feels really nice in here.\" He opened up more in that first meeting than I expected, which showed just how powerful the environment can be in building trust.\r\n\r\nStudents' Reactions When They First Saw the Space\r\nTheir reactions were immediate and genuine—comments like:\r\n\r\n\"It feels so cozy in here.\"\r\n\r\n\"This doesn't feel like a school office at all.\"\r\n\r\n\"Can I sit here while I wait?\"\r\n\r\nSeveral students mentioned that the plants and lighting made the room feel peaceful, and one student said, \"I feel like I can breathe in here,\" which affirmed the purpose of this project.\r\n\r\nRight now, I'm supporting students through academic transitions, goal-setting conversations, and emotional check-ins as they navigate high school demands. The welcoming environment makes it easier for them to speak openly about their challenges—whether it's adjusting to a new schedule, managing stress, or planning for their future.\r\n\r\nThis calming, student-centered space will continue to serve as the foundation for those conversations and for the supportive work we do together.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your kindness and generosity. You have helped create not just a counseling office, but a safe haven for high school students who need a place to land, reflect, and grow.","fullyFundedDate":1755871709362,"projectUrl":"project/counselors-corner-a-welcoming-space-fo/9557178/","projectTitle":"Counselor’s Corner: a Welcoming Space for HS Students","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Haviland","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9333672_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1742593997752","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9333672"},{"teacherId":9333672,"projectId":9465732,"letterContent":"Dear Donors,\r\n\r\nThank you for your incredible generosity in helping build a compassionate, welcoming counseling space for our students. Your support is already making an impact, and I'm excited to share how these new resources are being used each day. Please feel free to share our project with others who may want to support our mission!\r\n\r\nHow We're Using the New Resources\r\nOur new books, mindfulness tools, and sensory supports are now part of our individual and small-group counseling sessions, as well as our new compassion-centered lessons. One of our first projects—Seeing the World Through Another's Eyes—uses high-interest, age-appropriate stories to help students explore diverse perspectives, mental health experiences, and the importance of empathy in their daily interactions.\r\n\r\nJust this week, a student read a short passage about a teen experiencing anxiety. Afterward, he shared, \"I didn't know people felt it like that. I guess I need to pay more attention.\" That moment sparked a meaningful conversation about understanding hidden struggles in peers—exactly the type of reflection I hoped this project would inspire.\r\n\r\nA Specific Moment Made Possible by You\r\nDuring our first small-group session with the new materials, students were invited to choose a sensory tool to help them stay calm and regulated while we discussed acts of kindness. One student, who often struggles to sit still, quietly said, \"This helps me focus better,\" while turning a sensory ring in his hand. He participated more than I've ever seen. Moments like this show just how important these tools are.\r\n\r\nStudents' Reactions to the New Space\r\nWhen students first walked into the refreshed counseling room, their reactions were priceless. Several commented that the room \"felt different—in a good way,\" and one said, \"It feels safe in here now.\" They were especially excited about the stress relief tools and mindfulness journals, asking if they could use them during sessions and while completing reflection activities.\r\n\r\nNext Steps for Our Current Projects\r\nAs part of our Compassion in Action initiative, students will soon begin a service-learning project focused on helping others in our local community. Upcoming activities include:\r\n\r\nassembling hygiene kits or snack bags for local shelters,\r\n\r\ndeveloping peer-led mental health awareness messages, and\r\n\r\nplanning simple acts of kindness throughout the school.\r\n\r\nWe will measure growth using empathy self-assessments and reflection journals so students can see how their understanding evolves over time.\r\n\r\nBecause of you, our counseling space is becoming a place where students feel seen, valued, and empowered to make a difference—not only in their own lives, but in the lives of others.\r\n\r\nThank you again for supporting our students' well-being, emotional growth, and capacity for compassion.","fullyFundedDate":1755461255863,"projectUrl":"project/building-compassion-in-a-new-space-stor/9465732/","projectTitle":"Building Compassion in a New Space: Stories, Service & Empathy","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Haviland","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9333672_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1742593997752","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9333672"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_81015","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1655,"numTeachers":72,"percentFrplEligible":81,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":32,"percentWhite":34,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":26,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"23.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":73.3,"schoolId":81015,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Millville High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Millville High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-jersey/millville-public-schools/millville-senior-high-school/81015"}
