When students start with a point and a slope in point-slope form y - y_1 = m(x - x_1) the whiteboards provide the ideal space for the collaborative algebraic journey to slope-intercept form (y = mx + b). Because the whiteboards are non-permanent, students are encouraged to experiment with the multi-step process of distribution and isolation of y, knowing they can easily erase and correct any mistakes with signs or arithmetic. This immediate, low-stakes environment promotes risk-taking and perseverance in algebraic manipulation, which are critical skills often neglected when students simply work silently on paper. \r\nThe vertical surfaces are key to making the algebraic reasoning transparent and collaborative. As groups work, the visibility of their process allows them to collectively check their steps and discuss why they are distributing the slope (m) and why they are adding y_1 to both sides. This enhanced peer-to-peer discussion turns the concept of converting forms into a team challenge, solidifying their understanding of both the structure of the equation and the properties of equality. For me, the teacher, the whiteboards act as an instant diagnostic tool. I can quickly scan the room and spot common errors—such as forgetting to distribute m to the x_1 term or making an error when simplifying constants to find the y-intercept (b). This allows me to provide precise, timely feedback that redirects student thinking exactly","fullyFundedDate":1757423338231,"projectUrl":"project/vertical-whiteboard-for-interactive-lear/9675191/","projectTitle":"Vertical Whiteboard for Interactive Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. McLoughlin","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10007562"},{"teacherId":9799167,"projectId":9117062,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of our classroom! The new whiteboards have been an absolute game-changer for my students and me. As part of our Building Thinking Classrooms model, we've created vertical whiteboard spaces that encourage collaboration, movement, and deeper engagement with problem-solving.\r\n\r\nThe very first day we used them, my students were wide-eyed and excited. One student exclaimed, \"Wait—we got new whiteboard that are ACTUAL whiteboards?!\" There was an immediate energy shift in the room. Groups eagerly gathered around the boards, discussing strategies, testing ideas, and learning from each other in real-time. It was incredible to see students who are typically quiet step up to lead their groups and explain their thinking.\r\n\r\nCurrently, we're using the boards to work through complex math problems in teams. Instead of staying seated and working in isolation, students are actively talking through their reasoning and learning from their peers. It has fostered a sense of community and curiosity in our classroom, and it's all thanks to your donation.\r\n\r\nNext, we plan to integrate the boards into other subject areas, using them for brainstorming in writing, concept mapping in science, and even collaborative review games. These boards have truly transformed how we learn and work together.\r\n\r\nThank you again for making this possible. Your generosity has had a lasting impact on our learning environment, and we are so grateful.","fullyFundedDate":1744033103941,"projectUrl":"project/building-thinking-classroom-whiteboards/9117062/","projectTitle":"Building Thinking Classroom Whiteboards","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Smith","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9799167"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_73559","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":744,"numTeachers":89,"percentFrplEligible":9,"percentAsian":37,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":50,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":6,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"8.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":100.0,"schoolId":73559,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Marlboro Memorial Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Marlboro Memorial Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-jersey/marlboro-township-public-school-district/marlboro-memorial-middle-school/73559"}
