These new books are challenging; students now have the opportunity to take the lessons we cover in class- figurative language, inferencing, analyzing- and apply them to a book that they have an interest in. They are discovering new themes and new lifestyles that transcend the daily lessons. With these new diverse titles, I am able to encourage empathy and action for change.\r\n\r\nStudents are given free choice in the classroom when it comes to reading.They feel appreciated and respected that there are books available to them that they WANT to read. They are encouraged to step outside their comfort zone when reading- choose something that is new to them. There is so much of the world that they don't know about- the opportunity to step into different shoes through the eyes of these characters will impact the way they see reading.\r\n\r\nThose in my classroom who have not seen themselves as characters in the books in the past have come to find a new love of reading. It has been a breath of fresh air to see kids find the joy of reading. These students and my classroom are better for it. Providing kids with a chance to see the diversity in the world in times like these is so important.
