We've been focusing on identifying and managing emotions, with stories that provide relatable examples of characters experiencing various feelings and healthy ways to cope. Empathy has also been a major theme; students are learning to consider different perspectives and understand how their actions impact others through narratives that highlight kindness and respect. Problem-solving and conflict resolution are explored through scenarios where characters face challenges and collaboratively find solutions, prompting discussions about effective communication and compromise. Additionally, many texts emphasize the importance of self-awareness and building positive relationships, encouraging students to recognize their strengths and appreciate the unique qualities of their classmates.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is a dynamic and interactive experience. We begin each SEL unit with a whole-class read-aloud, allowing us to introduce the text and activate prior knowledge. This is followed by small group discussions where students delve deeper into the themes and characters, often using \"turn and talk\" strategies to share their initial thoughts. Independent reading time is a cornerstone, with students choosing books from our SEL collection that resonate with their interests or current emotional understanding.","fullyFundedDate":1744242729016,"projectUrl":"project/sel-superpowers-for-4th-graders/9241784/","projectTitle":"SEL Superpowers for 4th Graders","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Gaspari","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4486276_orig.png?crop=718,718,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1746843675664","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4486276"},{"teacherId":4486276,"projectId":8859921,"letterContent":"I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity our fourth-grade students have had to use the standing desk and kick bands in the classroom. The standing desks have also been a hit, with students able to \"rent\" the desk for a day, ensuring that everyone gets a turn.
