Students took turns measuring and they had fun doing it. My ESL first graders that sometimes are shy to speak were volunteering to offer their predictions and measurement findings. \r\n\r\n Another wonderful project I was able to purchase was a candy cane investigation where the students observed and recorded candy corn dissolving in water, salt water, water and vinegar and water and baking soda. My kits I was able to purchase serve all grade levels K-5 and whenever I take them out during my ESL classes, the kids get beyond excited. \r\n\r\nMy very first project was with 2nd grade students that mostly spoke Spanish. We built and painted a volcano and then made it erupt. The students that are learning basic vocabulary now were able to use words like magma, eruption and lava. It was incredible for them to describe what they saw using English. Some in sentences, some labeling, depending on their proficiency levels.\r\n\r\nMy third grade ESL students absolutely loved the unit on magnets. They were measuring, making predictions and thought that the experiments were like doing magic tricks. Not only they learned concepts, but they were able to articulate ideas like attract and repel. They were able to explain why magnets looked like they were floating and why some magnets were stronger than others. \r\n\r\nI can't wait to use the rest of the units in the coming weeks and months.","fullyFundedDate":1723685953559,"projectUrl":"project/teaching-esl-students-through-hands-on-s/8366952/","projectTitle":"Teaching ESL Students Through Hands-on Science!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Baitzel","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8806560_orig.jpg?crop=2326,2326,x56,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1714743706386","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8806560"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_81427","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":397,"numTeachers":40,"percentFrplEligible":63,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":47,"percentWhite":10,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":34,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"9.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":75.0,"schoolId":81427,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Parkway Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Parkway Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-jersey/ewing-township-public-schools/parkway-elementary-school/81427"}
