Having limited funding from year to year to purchase reading materials limits student access to reading that inspires discussions, generates new ideas and solutions, and encourages kids to have confidence in influencing change in an ever changing world. \r\n\r\nWhen the books arrived, it made a small classroom library transform into a more expansive experience that provided students access to reading materials that extended their thinking. Often, it is not uncommon for classroom libraries to become stagnant, but receiving new titles that more and more students want to read versus titles they have to read is invaluable. \r\n\r\nWhile reading the book, students appreciated the opportunity to not just have discussions about the characters and conflicts presented in the storytelling of How It Went Down, but they appreciated the opportunity to have a voice and be heard in conversations with other classmates as well as student lead teacher conversations that lead to higher level discussion about challenges affecting society today. \r\n\r\nBased on such positive feedback from students reading this book this year, it is without question that How It Went Down will continue to be a welcome and necessary addition to our classroom library of Book Club sets, giving students more opportunities to choose books which not only reflect their interests but also empower them to find their own voice through discussion, project based learning, and written reflection.","fullyFundedDate":1736979231848,"projectUrl":"project/empowering-children-conversations-about/8908559/","projectTitle":"Empowering Children: Conversations about Race and Community Responsibility","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lehrer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9819092"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_59471","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":926,"numTeachers":77,"percentFrplEligible":49,"percentAsian":14,"percentBlack":10,"percentWhite":37,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":30,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"12.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":55.8,"schoolId":59471,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Alder Avenue Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Alder Avenue Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-jersey/egg-harbor-township-school-district/alder-avenue-middle-school/59471"}
