They transformed the plain bags into personalized portfolios by decorating them with their own artwork, designs, colors, and creative ideas. The project gave students a fun and meaningful way to express their individual artistic styles while also creating something useful for their classroom work.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments was seeing how proud the students were of their finished portfolios. They were excited to use them to organize and carry their artwork, and they loved having something they created themselves. The portfolios also allowed my students to safely take their art projects home to share with their families.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue adding artwork and new projects to their portfolios throughout the school year. As students learn new techniques and explore different materials, their portfolios will become a collection of their artistic growth and accomplishments. Instead of only learning about these events through a textbook, students can now see history through the experiences and perspectives of the people who lived through it.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is more than simply reading for enjoyment. Students practice making inferences, identifying themes and central ideas, determining an author's point of view, making connections, and supporting their thinking with evidence from the text. The picture books have been especially helpful because they allow us to introduce complex historical and cultural topics in an accessible way before diving deeper into our lessons. We often read together, stop to discuss what we notice and wonder, and then connect the text back to what we are learning in social studies.
