We have become more focused on reading short texts more closely, and have less and less time for novels. Novels are the hook for many students to enjoy reading. In order to balance out the use of rich, short texts and engaging material for 4th graders, I requested help with getting some age appropriate novels for our class.\r\n\r\nIn our small group instruction, students with similar needs are grouped together. We have been using the Judy Blume novels as an anchor text for our discussions about literary elements. Some of our discussions have been around the use of idioms and figurative language in the text. Other talks have been focused on character and how actions show us a character's traits and motivations.\r\n\r\nThese books have made my students excited for their small group day. They walk in and say, \"Is today our day to read together, Mrs. Nadeau?\" I love to see the excitement around reading and discussion. They are eager to open a book and see a story through from beginning to end. My hope is that this is only the spark and they will continue on to read more and more.","fullyFundedDate":1772048713182,"projectUrl":"project/engaging-novels-for-small-group/10115368/","projectTitle":"Engaging Novels for Small Group","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Nadeau","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4741193_orig.jpg?crop=1664,1664,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1771766165434","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4741193"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_80258","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":256,"numTeachers":29,"percentFrplEligible":26,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":62,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":18,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"8.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":68.3,"schoolId":80258,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Broad Street Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Broad Street Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-hampshire/school-administrative-unit-42/broad-street-elementary-school/80258"}
