When students reach for a book instead of a phone, they are practicing essential literacy skills such as sustained attention, comprehension, inference, and vocabulary development—skills that are increasingly difficult in a fast-scrolling digital world. Many of the books also invite students to explore themes, character development, and perspective, reinforcing the same close-reading and critical thinking strategies we use during whole-class instruction. Even the puzzles and brain teasers support problem-solving, logic, and perseverance, encouraging students to think deeply and creatively without immediate digital gratification.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom now feels calmer and more intentional. During independent work time or after completing assignments, students choose a book, settle into a quiet space, and read for enjoyment rather than for a grade. Some read independently, others read side-by-side and discuss what they're noticing, and a few naturally transition between reading and other hands-on activities as a way to reset their focus. The Tech-Free Choice Corner has helped normalize reading as something students want to do—not just something they're told to do—while also creating a positive, low-stress environment that supports focus and reflection.\r\n\r\nSeveral students, in particular, have truly flourished with these new options. Reluctant readers who previously defaulted to their phones are now more willing to pick up shorter texts or high-interest books, often surprising themselves with how long they stay engaged. Other students who struggle with attention or anxiety benefit from the quiet, screen-free break, returning to classwork more focused and confident. Overall, this project has given students ownership over how they recharge and engage, helping them rediscover curiosity, creativity, and the simple joy of reading—something that will benefit them far beyond our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1758219317410,"projectUrl":"project/disconnect-to-reconnect-eliminating-cel/9410746/","projectTitle":"Disconnect to Reconnect: Eliminating Cell Phones in the Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Eisfeller","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6097709_orig.jpg?crop=775,775,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1718042441085","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6097709"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_80341","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":495,"numTeachers":28,"percentFrplEligible":17,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":81,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":6,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"17.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":73.3,"schoolId":80341,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Newmarket Junior Senior High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Newmarket Junior Senior High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-hampshire/school-administrative-unit-31/newmarket-junior-senior-high-school/80341"}
