I wanted to take the opportunity to share with you the incredible impact flexible seating has had on my second-grade classroom. As you know, I recently implemented a flexible seating arrangement, and I have witnessed firsthand how it has enhanced both the academic and social-emotional experiences of my students.\r\n1. Increased Student Engagement and Focus\r\nOne of the most notable improvements has been the boost in student engagement. Flexible seating allows my students to choose a seating arrangement that best supports their learning style. Whether they prefer working on a floor cushion, at a standing desk, or in a comfy chair, students are able to select spaces where they feel comfortable and focused. This has had a noticeable impact on their ability to concentrate during lessons, independent work, and group activities. I've seen students who may have once struggled to stay focused now eagerly participate, demonstrating a renewed sense of ownership over their learning.\r\n2. Promotes Collaboration and Teamwork\r\nThe shift away from traditional, stationary desks has also fostered a greater sense of collaboration among students. With flexible seating, students have more opportunities to work in pairs or small groups, regardless of their physical arrangement. This has allowed them to develop essential social and teamwork skills, such as effective communication, problem-solving, and cooperation. I've observed students working together on projects and helping each other with challenges in a more natural, fluid manner, which in turn has strengthened the classroom community.\r\n3. Fostering Responsibility and Decision-Making Skills\r\nFlexible seating encourages students to take responsibility for their learning environment. Each day, students make thoughtful decisions about where to sit based on their needs for that particular task. This fosters independence, as they consider how to balance comfort and productivity. In doing so, they are learning to make choices that align with their strengths and goals, empowering them to take charge of their own education.\r\n4. Supporting Social-Emotional Growth\r\nFlexible seating has also had a positive impact on students' social-emotional well-being. By offering a variety of seating options, students are able to find spaces that suit their mood or energy level. For example, some students may choose to sit on a cozy cushion for a more relaxed atmosphere, while others prefer to stand or use a wiggle stool to channel their energy in a productive way. This flexibility allows them to better manage their emotions and make choices that contribute to a positive classroom environment.\r\n5. Encouraging Movement and Comfort\r\nMany of my second graders have a lot of energy, and flexible seating provides them with an outlet to move while still staying on task. Whether it's wiggling in a chair or sitting on an exercise ball, these movements help students stay alert and comfortable. I've observed that students who previously seemed restless now have healthier outlets to engage with their surroundings, which has led to fewer disruptions and more productive learning sessions.\r\nIn conclusion, I believe flexible seating has greatly contributed to a more dynamic and positive learning environment in my classroom. The increased student engagement, enhanced collaboration, and improved social-emotional growth have made a significant difference in my students' overall experience. I am excited to continue incorporating flexible seating into my teaching practice, and I hope this approach continues to benefit my students in the future.\r\nThank you for your continued support in making our classroom a place where students can thrive and grow.","fullyFundedDate":1729713061032,"projectUrl":"project/flexible-seating-to-increase-student-suc/8888534/","projectTitle":"Flexible Seating to Increase Student Success!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. DiBenedetto","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9807804"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_70425","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":322,"numTeachers":28,"percentFrplEligible":13,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":89,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"1 - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"11.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":85.7,"schoolId":70425,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Sandown North Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Sandown North Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-hampshire/school-administrative-unit-106/sandown-north-elementary-school/70425"}
