Now that we have been in our new space for a few months, and now with new kitchen equipment for a teaching quarter, it is amazing to see how much this project has benefited our students. I was able to teach a Food Exploration class this quarter because of this project. Our students have been able to take full advantage of all that our kitchen should be.\r\n First, having this equipment has allowed our students to practice the skills that will be necessary (or already are) when they are out in the real world. Students are using stainless steel pans for the first time. While they can be intimidating, not being non-stick, the kids have thrived. We started out with egg frying practice. If you can cook and egg in stainless and it doesn't stick, you can cook almost anything! They were all successful with that task and have been successful with just about everything else. To get a good look at cooking methods, we cooked potatoes just about every way you can think of. After that we went all over the map. They have made steak and cheese subs, chicken broccoli alfredo, ramen, chicken noodle soup, mac and cheese, honey garlic chicken pizza, and more. The kitchen skills and recipes they have earned will prove invaluable to them in the future.\r\n It was not just kitchen skills that were learned in the kitchen. Team work, patience, math, creativity, bravery, and more were also acquired. Some of the kids in class have not interacted with each other before. Some were friendly, but not yet friends. In the kitchen, everyone is on the same team. If you are not working together you may not succeed. One student learned just how long it takes to properly melt chocolate with a double boiler, that is patience defined. Math has been an interesting infusion in class. Cooking does not take place without math and many of these kids did not realize that until this class. Fractions have been a learning curve! Creativity and bravery come without saying. Making new food combinations and trying food you have never tried before really does require bravery. \r\n With all of that said, the most important thing to say one again is, simply, thank you. Without all of you this never would have been possible.","fullyFundedDate":1732412621807,"projectUrl":"project/teaching-kitchen-needs-new-equipment/8789216/","projectTitle":"Teaching Kitchen Needs New Equipment","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Santy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7516875_orig.jpg?crop=674,674,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1726541707185","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7516875"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_32074","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":23,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":14,"percentAsian":6,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":78,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":5,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Weighted Average","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":53.1,"schoolId":32074,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Robert J Lister Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Robert J Lister Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-hampshire/portsmouth-school-department/robert-j-lister-academy/32074"}
