When I announced, during the first week of school, that each student would need to choose an individual novel to read for the next few weeks, I got the expected groans and comments like, \"I can't read a whole novel!\" However, when I told them about the books that had been donated by fantastic people like you, they looked at my bookshelves, their eyes got wide, and most of them actually got excited to look at the new titles. Even better, every single student has found a book to read.\r\n\r\nMy favorite moment (so far) occurred last week when I asked the students in all six of my classes to give an overall opinion on their books so far. I told them to be completely honest (and these kids are pretty blunt when it comes to things like this). When I asked how many of them were loving their books so far, 71% of them raised their hands! Then I asked how many of them weren't sure what they thought yet, and about 15% raised their hands. I also asked whether any of them hated their books and wanted to choose another, and no one's hand went up! (Yes, I realize that 71% and 15% don't quite add up to 100%, so I'm going to pretend that the other 14% simply haven't started reading their books yet...)\r\n\r\nFor the next few weeks, my goal is to simply get the students engaged in reading, giving them some small tasks they can complete with their individual novels each week--nothing high-stakes, because I don't want to make reading a burden. I give them 10-15 minutes each day to read their novels, but many of them have been reading outside of class, too. A few of them have already finished their books and are looking for more! I'm excited to have many more options for them to choose from than what I had last year. Again, thank you so much for your contribution--I deeply appreciate it.","fullyFundedDate":1747236763209,"projectUrl":"project/novels-for-anyone-and-everyone/9231515/","projectTitle":"Novels for Anyone and Everyone","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Poulsen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8065459"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_83040","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":151,"numTeachers":14,"percentFrplEligible":43,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":83,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":8,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"10.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":57.7,"schoolId":83040,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Lincoln County High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Lincoln County High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/nevada/lincoln-public-schools/lincoln-co-high-school/83040"}
