We also use the Mo Willems collection to study dialogue tags and subtext, showing our English Language Learners (ELL) how punctuation and visual cues change the meaning of a sentence. These books serve as the perfect \"mentor texts\" that bridge the gap between reading a great story and writing one.\r\n\r\nBecause of this project, reading in our classroom now looks like a bustling, professional literary lounge rather than a traditional, rigid row of desks. When it is time for our literacy block, the harsh fluorescent lights go off, the \"Calming Cafe\" twinkle lights come on, and students transition into their designated reading zones. You will see some students huddled on the new blue and green floor cushions sharing a graphic novel, while others are independently diving into a historical fiction novel under the soft glow of the lights. There is a palpable sense of focus and tranquility in the air. By changing the environment, we have successfully lowered the students' anxiety and created a space where they can truly get lost in a book.\r\n\r\nThere is one group of students in particular who have been completely transformed by these new resources: my reluctant readers and English Language Learners. Before this project, entering the reading corner felt overwhelming for them because the text-heavy books felt out of reach. Now, they are absolutely thriving. I have watched students who used to avoid reading time sprint to the new cushion corner to grab Swim Team or Miles Morales. The combination of high-interest visual storytelling and a cozy, low-stress seating area has given them the confidence they needed. They are no longer just passive observers in our classroom library; they are active, excited readers who are proud of the space they helped inspire. I was able to print money charts in color showing the different coins, and it has helped my students so much with telling them apart. I've also been able to create posters for our classroom and print game cards that we use every week to review what we've been learning. The students LOVE these games, they get excited, stay engaged, and don't even realize how much they're practicing because it feels fun.\r\n\r\nOne of the biggest highlights has been our IXL leaderboard. Every two weeks, the student with the most skills mastered gets a prize and a printed certificate showing their accomplishment. I also print certificates for big milestones like 100, 150, and 200 mastered skills, and even for answering 7,000, 10,000, and 15,000 questions. My students are always asking who is going to get the next certificate; it's something they really look forward to and take pride in.\r\n\r\nI was also able to create a readerpillar. The students check it every day and ask, \"Did we reach our goal yet?\" They're excited not just for themselves, but for the whole class, which has been really special to see.\r\n\r\nThe best part is seeing students who used to not really care about their work now getting excited about it. They're asking to participate, asking for more work, and actually wanting to improve.
