With your donation, our students had the opportunity to learn how to use locks for lockers—a big milestone as they prepare for middle school. This project not only helps them practice organization and responsibility, but it also builds confidence as they transition into a new stage of their education. Your kindness makes this important learning experience possible, and we are so grateful for the positive impact you are making in their lives.\r\n\r\nUsing locks and lockers helps 6th graders build the skills they need to be successful in middle school. Learning how to open a lock teaches patience and problem-solving, while keeping their locker organized encourages responsibility and time management. Lockers also give students a sense of independence, as they learn to take care of their own belongings and transition between classes on their own. These experiences prepare them for the routines and expectations of middle school, helping them feel more confident and ready for the next step in their education.\r\n\r\nWe were able to give each 6th grader a lock to take with them to middle school and to be successful once they leave our school. Here's how:\r\n\r\n1. Enhancing Language Development\r\nThe books provide rich, structured language input that supports vocabulary growth, grammar development, and sentence structure. For my students with speech and language disorders, exposure to this language in a visual and auditory format reinforces their therapy goals and facilitates progress.\r\n2. Encouraging Communication\r\nThe books naturally invite conversation. As a speech-language pathologist (SLP), I use them to prompt discussion, ask questions, and encourage storytelling, all of which help students practice expressive and receptive language skills in a meaningful context.\r\n3. Supporting Individualized Therapy Goals\r\nThe books can be tailored to a student's specific therapy goals—such as articulation, language comprehension, fluency, or pragmatic (social) language. Our new diverse collection of books allows me to choose materials that directly support a student's needs and developmental level.\r\n4. Improving Engagement and Motivation\r\nMany of my students are more motivated to participate in therapy groups when the activities are enjoyable and age appropriate. The high-interest books you donated make therapy sessions more engaging and less intimidating, especially for students with communication challenges.\r\n5. Providing Visual and Contextual Support\r\nThe books offer visual cues (pictures, text, story structure) that support comprehension and help my students make connections between words and meanings. For my students with limited verbal skills, the pictures in books can be used as visual prompts or as part of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) strategies.\r\n6. Building Confidence and Independence\r\nWhen my students recognize words or retell a familiar story, they gain a sense of accomplishment. This success builds confidence in their communication skills, which they can generalize to the classroom and social settings.\r\n7. Fostering Social Interaction\r\nShared reading activities that we use in group therapy promote turn-taking, listening, asking and answering questions, and perspective-taking—all key skills for my students with pragmatic language disorders.\r\n\r\nThis book donation has not been just about providing reading material—it has opened up new pathways for communication, learning, and growth for my students with speech and language disorders. Books are powerful tools that help me bring therapy to life in ways that are personal, purposeful, and profoundly impactful.","fullyFundedDate":1749482068241,"projectUrl":"project/literacy-links-strengthening-language/9391073/","projectTitle":"Literacy Links: Strengthening Language, One Story at a Time","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Paris","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10048474_orig.jpg?crop=1242,1242,x0,y178&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1763411398176","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10048474"},{"teacherId":8418550,"projectId":9251653,"letterContent":"We have been able to start the year at Conestoga with a huge focus on social emotional learning and our reset centers! By incorporating stories and characters that model these behaviors, SEL books create opportunities for children to see themselves in various situations and reflect on their own feelings. \r\nThrough the books donated from this project my students have been exposed to normalizing their emotions and and learning to express themselves in constructive ways. As they read about characters navigating challenges, they have learned valuable strategies for coping with stress, handling conflict, and fostering kindness, making these lessons feel more fun and relatable! \r\n\r\nThese books have also enhanced the dynamic of my class by fostering more of a community. When children are equipped with emotional vocabulary and a deeper understanding of their own emotions, they are more likely to engage in positive peer relationships and communicate effectively with others. In group settings, stories about teamwork, respect, and overcoming adversity have sparked meaningful conversations and built a culture of empathy and inclusion. This has created a supportive environment where my students feel safe to share, listen, and learn from each other, which can ultimately improve academic outcomes and overall well-being.","fullyFundedDate":1733234241215,"projectUrl":"project/building-emotional-intelligence/8980507/","projectTitle":"Building Emotional Intelligence","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Johnson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9816878_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1733369931756","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9816878"},{"teacherId":9816878,"projectId":8904755,"letterContent":"My students were over the moon with excitement when I showed them all of our new flexible seating options! The introduction of flexible seating options in my classroom has had a significant impact on student learning by creating an environment where they can choose seating arrangements that best support their individual learning styles. Whether it's sitting on a yoga ball, working on the floor in a rocking chair, or using the inflatable seats, these choices allow students to engage more comfortably and actively. By having control over their seating, students feel empowered and more responsible for their learning, leading to increased motivation and focus. Additionally, I have noticed less behavior problems with my students when they have the freedom to choose where they sit! \r\n\r\nI have noticed that this flexibility not only boosts student comfort but also enhances concentration and productivity. For instance, some students who might struggle with traditional desk seating due to attention or behavioral challenges have found that standing or using alternative seating options allows them to better manage their energy and stay engaged in the lesson. The increased comfort and autonomy help students feel more connected to the material, which ultimately leads to a more positive learning experience. \r\n\r\nThey are very excited to come to class now and I have seen more engagement with all my grade levels!
