Because of your kindness, my students now have access to engaging, high-interest reading material that has truly transformed the way they experience both reading and history.\r\n\r\nMiddle school is a critical time for developing strong reading habits, and motivating students to read independently can sometimes be a challenge. Many of my students are reluctant readers who struggle to find books that capture their attention and sustain their interest. The *Great Battles for Boys* series has done exactly that. From the moment the books arrived, students were eager to explore them. Several students immediately asked if they could start reading during free time, and others wanted to take turns borrowing the books to read at home. Seeing that level of excitement around reading has been incredibly rewarding.\r\n\r\nWhat makes this series especially impactful is how it presents historical events in a way that is accessible, action-packed, and meaningful for junior high students. The books bring famous battles and historical moments to life through vivid descriptions, real-life heroes, and clear explanations. My students have been drawn to the stories of courage, strategy, and perseverance, and they often discuss the battles with one another after reading. These conversations have helped strengthen comprehension skills while also building confidence in speaking and sharing ideas.\r\n\r\nBeyond reading engagement, the books have supported our social studies curriculum in powerful ways. Students are making connections between what they read independently and what we discuss in class. Several students have commented that the books helped them better understand historical conflicts and why they mattered. Others have asked thoughtful questions about leadership, decision-making, and the consequences of war. These discussions have encouraged critical thinking and deeper reflection, skills that extend far beyond the classroom.\r\n\r\nThe impact of your donation has also been emotional and personal for many students. Some students who previously felt disconnected from reading now feel successful and proud of themselves. I have noticed increased stamina during independent reading time, improved vocabulary, and greater willingness to tackle more challenging texts. One student shared that this was the first time they had ever finished a nonfiction book on their own, which was a powerful moment for both of us.\r\n\r\nYour support has created a classroom environment where reading feels exciting rather than intimidating. The *Great Battles for Boys* series has become a popular choice during silent reading, small group discussions, and even downtime at the end of the day. These books will continue to be used year after year, benefiting many groups of students and helping future classes discover a love for reading and learning.\r\n\r\nOn behalf of my students and myself, thank you for believing in our classroom and investing in our learners. Your generosity has made a lasting difference, and we are incredibly grateful for the opportunities you have provided. Because of you, history feels alive, reading feels enjoyable, and students feel inspired.\r\n\r\nWith sincere appreciation,\r\n\r\nBarbara Yager-Wach","fullyFundedDate":1762348567145,"projectUrl":"project/the-gift-of-reading-at-middle-school/9832693/","projectTitle":"The Gift of Reading at Middle School","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Wach","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8901744_orig.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1671212785935","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8901744"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_78923","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":194,"numTeachers":14,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":63,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":36,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"13.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":87.5,"schoolId":78923,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Harvard Public School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Harvard Public School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/nebraska/harvard-school-district-11/harvard-public-school/78923"}
