During small group reading time, students choose a cushion or wobble seat to sit comfortably while they work on comprehension activities. One of my favorite moments so far was during a writing workshop, we were brainstorming ideas, and I noticed how much more focused and collaborative the kids were when they could pick the seating that worked best for them. A few even said it made writing \"way more fun.\"\r\n\r\nThey were so excited! You would've thought it was a holiday. There were lots of \"Can I sit here?\" and \"This is so cool!\" comments flying around. A few students who normally struggle to stay still were visibly more relaxed and attentive. It really helped them feel like the classroom was their space.\r\n\r\nRight now, we're working on a collaborative research project where students are exploring topics like animals, space, and weather. The flexible seating has made it so much easier for them to work in small groups, stay focused, and feel comfortable while learning. As I transition into a departmentalized science position, even more students across multiple classes will benefit from these seating options. Every student who walks into my science classroom will have the chance to learn in a space that supports movement, focus, and collaboration; key ingredients for engaging in hands-on experiments and inquiry-based learning.
