They will also file artist bibliographies and statements and keep quality records to see the business side of being an artist. These texts have allowed us to explore key literacy skills such as making inferences, identifying themes, understanding character development, and using textual evidence to support ideas. With a more diverse selection of genres and topics, students are not only practicing reading strategies but also engaging in rich discussions about empathy, culture, and identity. These lessons go beyond the page, helping students think critically and connect literature to their own lives.\r\n\r\nReading time in our classroom has become one of the most anticipated parts of the day. Students choose books that truly interest them, and it's common to see them curled up in corners, reading with focus and joy. One student, who previously struggled with reading motivation, has completely turned around after discovering a series that sparked his curiosity. Another student, who speaks English as a second language, has been using books to build confidence, and now proudly reads aloud during group time. By integrating Robin Wall Kimmerer's themes of reciprocity, Indigenous knowledge, and environmental stewardship into the curriculum, students have gained a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of nature and human responsibility. Classroom discussions have sparked meaningful conversations about sustainability, cultural wisdom, and the importance of gratitude, reinforcing values that extend beyond academics into everyday life. Teachers have reported an increased level of student engagement, as the book's storytelling approach and scientific insights provide a unique and accessible way to explore complex ecological and ethical issues.\r\n\r\nOur students have participated in collaborative projects, such as school gardens, nature-based art installations, and service-learning initiatives focused on environmental conservation. Community events, including guest speakers, book discussions, and nature walks, have brought together families and local leaders to reflect on the book's messages. My students now have a space that is not only fun and engaging but also relaxing—a place where they can build their reading skills while feeling safe and comfortable. Every day, they walk into the classroom excited to grab a book, settle into their cozy chairs, and dive into stories that help them grow as readers. But it's not just about the words on the page—these resources are helping them find the words for their emotions, too. They are learning to express themselves, understand their feelings, and communicate with confidence. Seeing their joy and progress has been incredible, and it's all thanks to your generous support!\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their faces lit up with excitement. They couldn't wait to touch, explore, and—most importantly—play! The moment they realized that learning to read could be fun, they were hooked. The comfy chairs were a huge hit, with many students expressing how much they loved having a special spot just for them to learn and grow. Now, as we continue this journey, I'm excited to expand our resources even further. Adding more books from the Emotion Detective series will give students even more tools to understand their emotions and navigate the world around them. With your help, we're building a classroom that kids want to be in—a place where they feel empowered, supported, and excited to learn.
