Students read and listened to the audiobook, which made it accessible for diverse learners. The book introduced students to valuable insights from an Indigenous worldview and provided tangible examples of how science and cultural wisdom are intertwined through storytelling.\r\n\r\nStudents did several journals prompted by the text to highlight understanding and allow them to reflect on how the material connects to their own lives and views of the world. We experimented with the color wheel using lavender and yellow paper as the book suggested. Students also researched boarding schools and traced the \"Thread of Life\" of a few common objects. \r\n\r\nWe also had the opportunity to have Terry Brockie, an Aaniiih cultural and language teacher from Fort Belknap, join us as a guest speaker to learn more about Indigenous names for landmarks in our area. Then, as we neared the end of the book, each student was gifted a sweetgrass braid to model the culture of giving. The book and cultural lessons will also provide great context as they transition to the Unreserved project second semester.\r\n\r\nWe learned so much from this unit; your donation helped make it happen!","fullyFundedDate":1725030645065,"projectUrl":"project/braiding-sweetgrass-iefa-for-juniors/8692366/","projectTitle":"Braiding Sweetgrass: IEFA for Juniors!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Cirrincione","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9699794"},{"teacherId":9729714,"projectId":8739378,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous contribution. Without your help, I never would have been able to teach Shakespeare's \"Julius Caesar\" like I have been. Students today live in a fast-paced world of immediate gratification so getting them to read books in general is becoming more and more difficult. The No Fear edition of Shakespeare's famous play allows us to dive deeply into his original language for a thorough study while simultaneously offering an easily comprehensible modern English translation. Hence, my students can readily study and understand Shakespeare. \r\n\r\nTeaching this play in particular allows us to study themes that are still relevant today. The play explores the human thirst for power and the dangers therein, civic duty, manipulation, and the consequences of political violence, all of which lead to spirited discussion within the classroom. We also get to analyze fascinating characters in the likes of Brutus, Cassius, Mark Antony, and Caesar. The benefits go on and on. These lessons would never have been possible without your support.
