Your generosity has been greatly appreciated by your child's teachers, and more importantly by our students! As you hopefully experienced during our Student-Led Open House, we believe play is the BEST way to learn! If the students think 'they played all day!' then we have done our jobs! Please notice in the photos that the Magnatiles, for example, helped build our visual discrimination in order to follow an instruction card to build numbers, in turn concreting our knowledge of numeral names! The Magna tiles also helped build our communication and social skills to work together to build 'the tallest tower' and a 'jack-o-lantern for Hallloween'! I teach in a low income area. Creating a dynamic, lovely space for my young learners is important to me and thanks to your generosity, I've been able to do that. \r\n\r\nNatural exploration is the beginning to sparking curiosity. At the very beginning of the day, my students unpack and settle into their day. They get to explore with the morning activities which you provided: magnetic exploration and building activities. They love it. We also have a calming area that you provided for the children who come in dysregulated and upset. This is how the animals and books I received helped my students. Animals can help teach factual writing. Kindergarteners can learn to write short sentences based on simple facts they know about different animals, like \"A lion is big and can run fast\" or \"An otter can swim in water.\" \r\n Children often find animals fascinating, and thinking about their behaviors, sounds, and appearances can inspire fun and imaginative stories. Being able to utilize our new items was a great addition to inspire creativity and expanding our animal fact knowledge. For example, a kindergartener could write a story about and animal of their choice and then add a fact element to their writing. Once students have been able to hold the animal figure it gives them a better idea of different characteristics to write about. \r\n Books for young children often have simple, repetitive structures that are easy for them to imitate. By reading a picture book, they might notice how the author introduces a character, builds a story, or creates dialogue. We focused on learning about specific animal characteristics that interest us and that students would be able to write about at their level. Thanks again, we greatly appreciate the support!","fullyFundedDate":1737044417134,"projectUrl":"project/animal-fact-project/8805792/","projectTitle":"Animal Fact Project","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Cronk","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9767465"},{"teacherId":2318838,"projectId":8777165,"letterContent":"My 4th and 5th grade team are loving our new books! Previously, we were only allowed to use the reading curriculum the district purchased. Our curriculum went week by week. On Monday's we worked with eight vocabulary words and a short story. Tuesday's we did direct instruction on a genre, vocabulary skill, comprehension skill and a literary element. Wednesday's consisted of a longer story. Thursday's were kind of a catch up day and students took a quiz on Friday's. There of course was a fluency and grammar piece, and lots of worksheets.\r\n\r\nWhat did we find? Reading became monotonous. Many of the stories were snippets of novels-we never found out what happened. A lot of the stories were uninteresting and many were too high of a Lexile for my students. I surveyed my students at the beginning of the year and many of them said they did not like reading which saddened me. In addition, our test scores were not showing the improvement we liked. Finally, we were finding that many of our students were not reading books on their own cover to cover. Or, were reading the same book all year.\r\n\r\nWe were given permission to do novel studies. Our kids are LOVING this! They are reading both fiction and non fiction. We are able to differentiate but are also finding that lower students are attempting more difficult texts because of the high interest levels! Everyone of my students test scores have improved! Our school does not have an art program and we do not have art supplies; quite unbelievable. All I had was the small Crayola water color pack with the tiny brush that the children brought in with their supplies. These do not last long at all.\r\n\r\nThanks to you, I was able to stock my classroom and share with my grade level the much need supplies to paint and create. My goal was two fold, give children the much needed opportunity to create and also to link literature to art. The children and I have had so much fun doing both.\r\n\r\nBecause of you the children have opportunities throughout the week to freestyle create as well as having an art class with myself. The photos I attached are from our van Gogh sunflower lesson. We studied sunflowers, read about van Gogh, drew and painted. We used three different mediums to color our three drawings: watercolors, tempera paint, and oil pastels. All were provided by you! You gave us the means to give our students the gift of artistic expression!
