Instead, I put students in a reading group based on reading ability. Then they get to choose their books (giving students a choice is a priority for me, as then they have skin in the game). They have 20 minutes of free reading time at the beginning of the class. Then they have to write 2-3 sentences about what they read, using various answers. For instance, at times they find something interesting, ask and answer a question, find a vocabulary word, or describe a character. Other times we focus on literary elements that they find while reading. This is a short 2-3 minute write which develops short answer writing skills, and I don't think that writing a ton about what they read is the most effective way to teach reading. I also give them a short multiple-choice quiz once a week on their novel. Finally, they have to do an assignment on the book.\r\n\r\nThey read 10 genres throughout the year, of which Mystery/Drama is one. Mystery books teach many different skills, such as critical thinking as they develop deductive reasoning to solve the mystery. They have to pay attention to details and make inferences. Mysteries help develop cause-and-effect understanding while developing their vocabulary. Mystery books are also fun to read and engage the students in a way that a non-fiction book typically does not at this age.","fullyFundedDate":1726255228656,"projectUrl":"project/riders-to-the-rescue/8712238/","projectTitle":"Riders to the Rescue","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Giles","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9712233"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_107964","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":38,"numTeachers":5,"percentFrplEligible":50,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":90,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":2,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"7.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":50.0,"schoolId":107964,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Fairfield Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Fairfield Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/montana/fairfield-school-district-21/fairfield-middle-school/107964"}
