I have seen more engagement by all of my students with the introduction of the materials!\r\n\r\nI work with a population that is often challenging to motivate, and I focus on a notoriously disliked area, the writing portion of literacy. With the materials funded by your generosity, I have seen students who were previously extremely difficult to motivate suddenly become engaged in writing! With some children this was due to a new and fun way to work on letters, such as by stringing beads with the letters of their name, sorting the beads by \"this letter is in my name\" and \"this letter is not in my name\" after digging through a sensory bin to find the beads. Some of the children have been happy to work on a writing assignment in order to play with the snap together dinosaurs or with the kinetic sand after completing their work. Similarly, the Squigz and magnetic building tiles are a hit with all the children and I love to see their eyes light up when I bring out a new toy! Sadly public schools, and especially special education, are notoriously under-funded, so many of my old materials were tired and no longer motivating for the students. \r\n\r\nI work in several different schools, so I have been able to move things from district to district after a couple of weeks, so the kids are always seeing something new. It's been such a blessing. The social skill books are wonderful for teaching children appropriate interactions with friends and adults. The books you have purchased have made a big impact on my students reading. When I listed the book series that I needed to add to my classroom library, it was with the intent to entice all my students to want to read these new series. I started off by reading aloud the first book in each series, hoping to entice the kids to want to read more of them. Students who didn't eve like to read, started to read more. An example of this is one boy, who is very talented in athletics, never wanted to read. He had no desire to, even in our small reading groups. He can read way beyond his grade level but just had no interest. After I read the first book in the series about a boy hunting with his father. He really connected with it, as he and his dad often go hunting together. Which is a huge pass time here in rural Montana. He started to read the second book, and would bring it up to me and tell me how the events in the books are similar to things he and his father have encountered. Now he has continued to read more and I even asked the librarian to find books on this subject for him to check out. \r\n\tAnother example of how these new books have impacted my students. I have a student that thinks he is a terrible reader. He is far behind his peers when it comes to the level he can read. After reading the first book in the Stink series he decided to give it a try. He really liked how funny this story was and wanted to read more. I told him to give it a try, and he often would come and read to me or tell me what was happening to the character in the book. I must say, all this practice he has been doing has made a great impact. At the beginning of school he was reading 20 words a minute. Now he is reading 60 words per minute. I showed him how all his reading has helped him improve his fluency and he was amazed. I could tell he was very proud of himself. \r\n\tSo, as you can see, these books you have helped purchase, has made a great impact on these to students and many other students in my classroom. I always tell my second graders that my job is to prepare them for 3rd grade, which is even harder than second grade. So it their job to work hard so they are ready for 3rd grade. When it comes to reading, all my students oral fluency has drastically went up. Every single kid! \r\n Thank you again so much for supporting my classroom. I was about to give up on Donors Choose, because the first time I tried it, my family members felt bad for me because no one was donating towards the end time. So, they ended up paying for it. I didn't want that to happen again. You have given me hope that there are great and wonderful people in the world that do care. Again, thanks so much.\r\n\r\nSheila Roberts - 2nd Grade\r\nColumbus Elementary School\r\nColumbus, Montana","fullyFundedDate":1728002728644,"projectUrl":"project/enticing-kids-to-read-chapter-books/8778971/","projectTitle":"Enticing Kids to Read Chapter Books","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Roberts","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6756303_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1727794535004","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6756303"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_78729","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":320,"numTeachers":20,"percentFrplEligible":32,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":88,"percentIndigenous":2,"percentLatinx":5,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"16.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":70.6,"schoolId":78729,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Columbus Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Columbus Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/montana/columbus-school-district-6/columbus-elementary-school/78729"}
