We're using the materials as part of an ongoing observation and growth project connected to science and writing. Each student \"adopted\" one of the plants, and every week they measure its growth, note changes, and record observations in a plant journal. The shelf has become our living mini-lab—students check on it during transitions, before recess, and even as they enter the room in the morning.\r\n\r\nThey were genuinely amazed. Many had never seen plants displayed this way before, especially with clear planters that let them see what's usually hidden—roots, soil layers, and moisture changes. It sparked so many immediate questions: How fast will this one grow? Why do some roots curve? Can we name them? Their enthusiasm has turned this project into one of the most engaging parts of our day.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to begin short research projects about each plant type. Students will learn about their plant's needs, origin, and ideal growing conditions, then create a mini-presentation or infographic. We'll also be starting a simple experiment comparing growth in different amounts of sunlight and water. The shelf makes it easy for students to observe changes up close and track results like real scientists.\r\n\r\nThanks to your support, our classroom has become brighter, greener, and filled with daily curiosity. These resources are making a difference far beyond what the students originally imagined.","fullyFundedDate":1757953978575,"projectUrl":"project/rooted-in-learning-growing-science-in-o/9413143/","projectTitle":"Rooted in Learning: Growing Science in Our Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Miederhoff","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp549158_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1515555318026","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/hmiederhoff"},{"teacherId":549158,"projectId":9268116,"letterContent":"In our 5th grade classroom, students are using fraction tiles as a hands-on tool to explore and understand key concepts about fractions. These colorful, visual manipulatives help students compare fractions, find equivalent fractions, and perform operations like addition and subtraction. By physically manipulating the tiles, students can see how different fractions relate to one another—such as noticing that two 1/4 tiles take up the same space as one 1/2 tile. This makes abstract ideas more concrete and supports the development of strong number sense and conceptual understanding.\r\n\r\nIn addition to using fraction tiles, students are also participating in a math activity called \"Two Truths and a Lie.\" In this game, students are presented with—or create—their own three math statements, two of which are true and one that is intentionally false. The challenge is for their classmates to figure out which statement is the \"lie\" and explain why. This activity encourages critical thinking, strengthens communication skills, and reinforces students' understanding of mathematical concepts. Because it's interactive and fun, it also keeps students highly engaged.\r\n\r\nAnother classroom favorite is our use of BrainQuest cards. These fast-paced, question-and-answer cards turn review time into an exciting challenge. Students love working in teams or playing whole-class games where they race to answer math questions correctly. The BrainQuest cards help reinforce skills we're learning in a fun, low-pressure way, and they spark friendly competition that keeps students motivated and involved.\r\n\r\nTogether, these activities—fraction tiles, Two Truths and a Lie, and BrainQuest challenges—make math both meaningful and enjoyable. They support deeper learning, build confidence, and create a classroom environment where students are excited to think, talk, and play with math.","fullyFundedDate":1749572530390,"projectUrl":"project/math-enrichment-toolkit-resources-for-s/9268116/","projectTitle":"Math Enrichment Toolkit: Resources for Skill Building","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Miederhoff","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp549158_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1515555318026","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/hmiederhoff"},{"teacherId":6848352,"projectId":9258029,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donations of books to our classroom. Having engaging, high-interest books available has made a real difference—students are not only picking them up, but also asking to read together and share their thoughts.\r\n\r\nIt has been such a joy to see reluctant readers begin to lean into stories and discover that reading can be fun, meaningful, and even something they look forward to. Each student has their own box that holds essential materials like math journals, unfinished work, manipulatives, and reference charts. This system has made a big difference—students now know exactly where to find everything they need, which saves time and builds independence. Plus, I no longer need to make multiple copies of lost papers because nothing gets misplaced! The book boxes have truly helped create a smoother, more efficient learning environment where students can focus on what matters most: learning and growing in math.\r\n\r\nPlus-Plus blocks have become a favorite in our classroom, and for good reason! These colorful, interlocking pieces can be used to create both 2D mosaics and complex 3D structures, making them perfect for hands-on learning and open-ended exploration. They help students develop fine motor skills, spatial reasoning, and creative problem-solving, all while having fun. Whether they're building a model of a bridge or designing their own imaginary creature, students engage in critical STEM thinking—learning about balance, weight distribution, and structural integrity along the way. Plus-Plus blocks also promote collaboration, as students often work together to brainstorm and build. With endless possibilities, these blocks support both creativity and engineering thinking, turning playtime into meaningful, skill-building moments.","fullyFundedDate":1742924936382,"projectUrl":"project/plus-plus-blocks-infinite-possibilities/9065081/","projectTitle":"Plus Plus Blocks: Infinite Possibilities","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Miederhoff","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp549158_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1515555318026","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/hmiederhoff"},{"teacherId":549158,"projectId":8794844,"letterContent":"My students were excited to receive these book boxes! I wanted to share how helpful they have been in my 5th-grade classroom. These simple tools have made a big difference in helping students stay organized, and it's clear how much they've boosted their confidence in their schoolwork.\r\n\r\nBefore using book boxes, many students struggled to keep track of their papers and materials. Important assignments would get lost, and homework often ended up crumpled or difficult to read. But now, with book boxes, that's no longer an issue! Each student has a designated space to store their materials, making it easy to find exactly what they need for math, small group work, or independent study.\r\n\r\nWhat's even better is that their materials stay in good condition. Papers don't get torn or mixed up, and students feel more in control of their supplies. This sense of organization helps them focus better on their tasks and engage more confidently in their learning. With everything in its place, they can transition smoothly between activities without scrambling for missing materials.\r\n\r\nIn the end, book boxes aren't just about keeping things neat—they're giving students the tools they need to succeed. By fostering independence and organization, these simple boxes are making a big impact on their learning experience. It's amazing to see how such a small change can lead to greater confidence and a stronger love for learning.\r\n\r\nThank you for your continued support in creating a learning environment where all students can grow and thrive!","fullyFundedDate":1736264538496,"projectUrl":"project/help-organize-our-lives/8794844/","projectTitle":"Help Organize Our Lives","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Miederhoff","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp549158_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1515555318026","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/hmiederhoff"},{"teacherId":2570037,"projectId":8923771,"letterContent":"One of the incredible things about these projects is that I get to share the kindness of people with my students.
