Through participation, my students have been able to gain a deeper understanding of their emotions and learn how to manage them more effectively. Many of my students often struggle to express their feelings or identify what they are experiencing in moments of frustration, disappointment, or conflict. However, this project created a safe and supportive space for them to explore those emotions, practice self-awareness, and develop coping strategies that they can use inside and outside the classroom.\r\n\r\nAs a school counselor, one of my main goals is to help students build strong social and emotional foundations that will serve them for years to come. This project complemented my SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) lessons beautifully by reinforcing key concepts such as empathy, self-regulation, and relationship-building. Students learned that emotions are normal and manageable, and that the way they choose to respond in difficult situations matters. They also practiced problem-solving, positive communication, and self-advocacy—skills that are vital for their academic success and personal growth.\r\n\r\nIn addition to helping students manage emotions, this project has supported critical discussions around bullying, belonging, and suicide prevention—especially during Suicide Awareness Month. These topics can be sensitive but are incredibly important to address at the elementary and middle school levels. Through guided activities, videos, and discussions, students gained a better understanding of what it means to show kindness, include others, and recognize when someone might be struggling emotionally. They learned how to seek help from trusted adults and how to be supportive peers. These lessons not only align with our SEL standards but also help build a safer, more compassionate school community.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding outcomes of this project has been seeing the positive changes in student interactions. Students are showing more empathy toward one another, using strategies to calm themselves when upset, and expressing their feelings in healthier ways. For example, several students who previously struggled with anger or impulsivity have learned to take \"calm-down\" breaks, use coping tools, or talk through their frustrations instead of reacting negatively. Teachers have also noticed a difference in classroom behavior, with many students demonstrating greater focus and cooperation.\r\n\r\nThis experience has reminded me of how vital social-emotional learning is to overall student well-being. Academics are important, but without emotional understanding and coping skills, students struggle to reach their full potential. This project has reinforced that when we invest in students' emotional and social development, we are also investing in their confidence, relationships, and lifelong resilience.\r\n\r\nWe truly thank you for making this opportunity possible. Your support has allowed us to provide meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that help students grow not only as learners but also as individuals. It's through initiatives like this that we can continue to nurture the whole child—helping them feel seen, supported, and empowered to thrive in every area of their lives. On behalf of myself and all our scholars, we sincerely appreciate your generosity and commitment to their success.","fullyFundedDate":1753992079258,"projectUrl":"project/safe-seen-and-supported-a-project-for/9466245/","projectTitle":"Safe, Seen, and Supported: A Project for Student Wellness","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Evans","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10080916"},{"teacherId":9588240,"projectId":8490645,"letterContent":"On behalf of my class, I want to extend our deepest gratitude for your generous donation of books. Your gift has been a profound catalyst in our students' journey of self-discovery and cultural exploration. These books have opened doors to new worlds, allowing our students to see themselves in literature while also developing a greater appreciation for the diversity that exists beyond their own experiences.\r\n\r\nFor many of my students, reading was once a reluctant activity. However, your donation has changed that narrative. Books like \"Frizzy\" and \"When Stars Are Scattered\" have captivated their minds and ignited their passion for storytelling. Seeing characters who reflect their own identities has fostered a newfound sense of belonging and confidence. No longer are they merely reading words on a page; they are seeing themselves, their struggles, their joys, and their dreams brought to life.\r\n\r\nBeyond personal representation, these books have served as a bridge to other cultures, languages, and traditions. Our class discussions have been enriched by the curiosity sparked from reading about different ways of life, societal norms, and historical perspectives. The students have eagerly explored unfamiliar customs, asked thoughtful questions, and drawn meaningful connections between their own heritage and the diverse experiences depicted in these books. It has been remarkable to witness their enthusiasm for learning expand beyond the classroom walls.\r\n\r\nAs an educator, witnessing this transformation has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. Your generosity has not only provided books but also the gift of wonder, imagination, and a lifelong love of reading. You have given my students the tools to explore, to dream, and to embrace both their own identities and the diverse world around them.\r\n\r\nWe cannot thank you enough for your kindness and for recognizing the importance of representation in literature. Your support has made a lasting impact on the lives of my students, and for that, we are eternally grateful.","fullyFundedDate":1733284060604,"projectUrl":"project/explore-the-world-one-book-at-a-time/8490645/","projectTitle":"Explore the World One Book at a Time","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Langston","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9588240_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1723635834718","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9588240"},{"teacherId":7944989,"projectId":8647927,"letterContent":"Materials made available to students at Kipp Wisdom Academy through Donors Choose allowed them to explore radial design, pattern, self-portraits, and shape and line.
