My students especially love having a comfortable, calming space they can use when they need a minute to reset, refocus, or just take a break before getting back to work. One moment that really stood out to me was watching a student who was becoming frustrated with an assignment choose to take a short break in what my students affectionately call the \"spinny chair.\" After a few minutes, the student was able to calm down, come back to the table, and try again. That may seem like a small thing, but in my classroom, those moments are huge. When my students first saw all of the new materials, they were so excited! They wanted to look at everything, try it out, and know what each item was for. Seeing their excitement made me just as excited because I knew these resources were going to help make our classroom a place where they feel comfortable, supported, and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nOur next step is learning how to use these resources independently and appropriately. We are working on recognizing when we are becoming frustrated or overwhelmed, choosing a strategy that helps us calm our minds, and then returning to our learning. At the same time, we are working hard on building our reading and math skills in small groups and individually. My goal is for my students to understand that having a difficult moment doesn't mean they have to give up. They can take a moment, regroup, and keep going. Thanks to our donors, I now have more tools to help teach them those skills while also helping them grow academically.
