The students are doing a lab on thermochemistry, so they get to burn Cheetos. They are surprised when they see how much energy is in a single Cheeto. I tell them they can start a campfire with them. The students were very excited when the saw the boxes arrive. They were curious and anxious to do the lab and use the equipment. I use this lab to demonstrate to the students the stored energy that is in food and teach them how to calculate calories. Using professional grade products like cobalt chloride test paper and limewater solution instead of home made or store bought supplies makes a big difference to the students.\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials still in the boxes they were very curious and excited. They immediately wanted to do the lab. The students are so engaged when they are doing a lab. I think they can see themselves as real scientists because they are using real lab equipment and not plastic cups and household products. After this lesson we will be moving forward into acid and base lessons. This lab was a good place to start without corrosive chemicals.
