When they first saw these materials they were excited and curious. Once they realized that the growing, maintaining, and harvesting of these herbs would all be done themselves, they took it very seriously. I didn't have to step in and prevent accidental damage as students policed each other. They learned EVERYTHING about hydroponics and gardening, not just the parts that we learned in class.\r\n\r\nSpeaking of class, these plants were instrumental in covering many of my curriculum objectives. Biology is a course that students must pass to graduate, and this kit both helped spur interest in the real-life parts of this course as well as illustrated key points in such topics as photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration, cycles of biomatter, living characteristics, plant cells, and other topics. Best of all, they will be able to harvest, taste, and use some of these herbs in the very near future. I'm as excited about that as they are.\r\n\r\nBest of all, this impact will last for years to come. The kit is reusable, and there are already enough single-use components to do this again next year, not that they are particularly expensive, anyway. I can't thank you enough for turning my students, many of whom were struggling when they got here, into scientists, farmers, and future GRADUATES!!","fullyFundedDate":1735657844979,"projectUrl":"project/using-plants-to-enhance-inner-city-alter/8696259/","projectTitle":"Using Plants to Enhance Inner-City Alternative School Science Experience","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Burris","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6621059_orig.jpg?crop=432,432,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1724439919926","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6621059"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_10026","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":145,"numTeachers":19,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":93,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"4 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"7.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Weighted Average","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":66.7,"schoolId":10026,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Capital City Alternative School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Capital City Alternative School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/mississippi/jackson-public-school-district/capital-city-alternative-school/10026"}
