It's helped them open up and talk easier with me or just relax when they are feeling stressed.\r\n\r\nOne student came into my office and exclaimed, \"This is the best room in the whole school!\" It felt good to hear that and I have my donors to thank for that. My students have definitely benefited from your generosity! What started as a box full of granola bars, fruit snacks, and Oreos ended with smiling faces and gratitude for this quick pick-me-up during the school day. My office is already an inviting environment, but with snacks, I have had the opportunity to get more students in my space this year. The rumor about Ms. Berndt's snacks even made it to the middle school attached to our building. \r\n\r\nOnce I was able to lure students to my office with a granola bar, they also like to peak around to see the other treasures I have available. My favorite fidget for students to use is the Nee-Doh Nice Cube. It's a big hit with the students because it's got just the right amount of squish, but it also holds up really well to regular use. Every student that comes to my office takes notice of the Nee-Doh collection, and they just can't help giving them a gentle squish.\r\n\r\nMy office is a place of safety for students to feel heard, seen, and respected. I focus on brief counseling strategies to help students return to regulation and calm rationality. Providing visual aids for reminders of my office norms and coping tools has been a great resource, plus they are pretty cute. I've included pictures of my office, but unfortunately the snacks are long gone.
