Part of our curriculum involves parenting lessons, and we are thrilled to be able to include these keepsake items as part of that curriculum this year. Every single student was happily surprised, incredibly grateful and felt cared for by your generosity. Each student came to staff personally to ask how these baskets came to be. We explained it was donated by incredibly generous people in our community (aka you :)! Students were amazed that people who didn't even know them stepped in to help create such a wonderful, worthwhile gift. Two students (who are sisters) actually teared up because they said they really needed something good to happen as a pick-me-upper. They said the timing couldn't be better--it is a miracle (one of the students said). \r\n The wellness baskets will help make the two week break from school easier and more relaxing for all students. Our school motto is: \r\nThe more we know about each other, the more we care about each other. \r\nThe more we care about each other, the stronger our community. \r\nAs donors, you assisted our school in accomplishing just that--students feeling cared for at a time that many of us take for granted. \r\n The next step of our instruction is for students to write a reflection over break about how the wellness baskets impacted their lives. They will share their reflections once school resumes in January.\r\n We've included a photo of students behind their baskets. A significant portion of students' credit-bearing English Language Arts work is based on analysis of a grade level text. If you think back to high school English, you may remember fat books packed with words, and zero illustrations - books that are dense and can be difficult for many. For some English learners, it is a huge lift to access those texts independently. However, by providing texts in illustrated graphic novel format, students can still access the same rich stories, with the support of beautiful sequenced illustrations to support their understanding. If you have never read graphic novels yourself, I highly recommend giving them a try! There are many nuanced, complex, incredible publications on the market for all ages and in all genres.\r\n\r\nDuring first quarter, two students were able to finish independently reading graphic novels and produce the required analysis to get great grades in the first quarter of English. One was able to read her story in Spanish, then present her responses in English, and having both the English and Spanish versions of the same book really helped her deepen her understanding. It was so gratifying to see both students engaged in and enjoying grade level stories. Being able to read extensive texts is a high school level skill and both students were able to demonstrate their ability to this with the right texts in your hands. \r\n\r\nYour support is so meaningful! Thank you again!","fullyFundedDate":1727980190732,"projectUrl":"project/teen-english-learners-need-pairings-of-n/8849331/","projectTitle":"Teen English Learners Need Pairings of Novels & Graphic Novels","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. McCully","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp926003_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1493427961348","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/kellimccully"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_66734","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":45,"numTeachers":9,"percentFrplEligible":86,"percentAsian":23,"percentBlack":19,"percentWhite":18,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":12,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"8 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"5.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Record","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":50.0,"schoolId":66734,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Agape Center on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Agape Center","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/minnesota/saint-paul-public-schools/agape-center/66734"}
