We have jumped in and have been putting these magazines to use with each delivery. My intention for these materials was to help students become better nonfiction readers and information discerners. With an onslaught of information available, it can be incredibly difficult to discern fact from fiction and quality from quantity. With practice, my hope is that my students will continue to become better at this. \r\n\r\nMy secondary purpose was to spark an interest in my 9th graders to become curious about the world around them. Many self-reported to not have a serious interest in news, meaning that the only \"news\" they are exposed to is what their social media algorithms show them. By giving them opportunities to read accessible news stories and think deeply about them, the goal is that it becomes a habit and their curiosity about the world around them grows as they do.\r\n\r\nLastly, the physical copies of the magazines are available to students at all times, so when there is downtime or they have forgotten their reading book, they have a solid resource to read instead of spending time with a random book during reading time that they will not revisit.
