The students have really enjoyed reading a book that is set in times (and a place) that they can more easily relate to. The Firekeeper's Daughter also allows our indigenous student to see themselves in a character that is powerful and making a difference within her community. In addition, this book has allowed students who are not indigenous to understand some of the customs and experiences that they may not have been aware of before reading this. \r\nIn my classroom this is a book that we read and discussed together within the classroom. This allows students to see and practice reading strategies together, so they may improve their reading abilities. In addition to practicing reading, students also explore the Indigenous culture and discussed their history and the impact this history has on the modern Indigenous population.","fullyFundedDate":1757945261616,"projectUrl":"project/indigenous-literature-in-the-classroom/9653621/","projectTitle":"Indigenous Literature in the Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Rainwater","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3426376_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y131&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1646402484555","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3426376"},{"teacherId":5945614,"projectId":9129146,"letterContent":"The students enjoyed their snacks. It was fun reading this book in the classroom with the students. Many of the students that struggle reading could use not only the words but the visuals to help gain an understanding of the story. Their confidence in reading grew with this novel. They began not only reading, but they became more willing to share their views and discuss this novel on a much deeper level. They not only grew in their comprehension and fluency skills, but they also grew in their ability to analyze the literature and critically think about society and people's experiences. The book Trickster: Native American Tales A Graphic Collection has helped with this. Your gift has created in my classroom some new readers!\r\n\r\nIn addition, the book Trickster: Native American Tales A Graphic Collection has helped my students be more critical of the books and media that they are reading and exposed to not only in school but outside of school as well. In class, they have begun discussing the reasons authors are making color choices and the impact these things have on the book's meaning. This has created a much more rich conversation around the graphic novels and the cultures represented in the novels that students are reading and the messages they see in these novels and out of school media.\r\n\r\nFinally, students are using the techniques they have seen in the book to express themselves. It has been so fun over the last month listening to students discuss how they are going to use color to create fear in their audience or use a new way to show that time has elapsed in their story. These are real discussions happening in class because of your contribution.
