We offer snacks twice a week, and those days have quickly become something students look forward to. The snacks help students who may not have enough to eat during the day stay focused, regulated, and ready to learn. \r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the snack supplies arrive, they were excited and sincerely thankful. They asked questions about where the snacks came from and were surprised to learn that caring donors chose to support their school. The students have really enjoyed reading a book that is set in times (and a place) that they can more easily relate to. The Firekeeper's Daughter also allows our indigenous student to see themselves in a character that is powerful and making a difference within her community. In addition, this book has allowed students who are not indigenous to understand some of the customs and experiences that they may not have been aware of before reading this. \r\nIn my classroom this is a book that we read and discussed together within the classroom. This allows students to see and practice reading strategies together, so they may improve their reading abilities.
