They are so excited to have real tools to do real science. We have discovered new habitats as we clean our storm drains and are astounded to notice how different the temperature is on the grass or on the sidewalk. Even learning about maps and geography takes on a whole new aspect when you have a compass in your hand and know exactly which way Europe and Asia are. They are also so excited to 'beat the calculator' and are very motivated to learn math facts.\r\n\r\nBeing able to tap into our creative side has also been very motivating and engaging. Painting water drops with water colors as we discuss the properties of water is an amazing experience. One student exclaimed \"This is the best science class ever!\" \r\n\r\nOne key project has had so many more connections than I anticipated. We pracitce self focus and calming everyday with breathing and medication exercises. To add crochet as a way to calm and focus has been very effective. Add to that the conversations we have about the worry worms we are creating as tools to help with social emotional regulation to the actual worms we have found near our storm drains and in the garden and you have something transformational.
