We've been using the putty and Play-Doh a lot during small group time and transitions, just to give students something to do with their hands while they're listening or waiting, and it's helped more than I expected. The timers have also been really helpful—especially for kids who struggle with waiting or moving between activities. One moment that stuck with me was a student who usually can't stay with a group for more than a minute or two, but with a small piece of putty and a 3-minute timer, he stayed the whole time. It doesn't sound huge, but for him it really was.\r\n\r\nWhen we first brought everything out, the kids were SO excited—lots of \"what is that??\" and wanting to touch everything right away. I was a little worried it might be too much, but it actually settled pretty quickly and turned into something calming for most of them. The bean bags and animal figures have been fun too—we've used them for sorting, describing, and just simple play, which has been great for language and connection. It's also made it easier for staff to respond in the moment with something supportive instead of always feeling like we're reacting to behavior.\r\n\r\nRight now we're just trying to be more intentional about building these into our daily routines instead of only pulling them out when things are hard. Some of the kids are already starting to figure out what helps them (like going to grab putty or asking for a timer), which is really cool to see. Next steps will probably be using the animals more for storytelling and social skills, and continuing to help students use the tools more independently.
