In previous years students would ask for books about different holidays. Many of the books we had were outdated. There were also big holes in representation of the holidays that are celebrated at our school. With this project and your help, we were able to add books about Ramadan, Dia de los Muertos, Kwanzaa, and others. The books also show more diverse representation of kids and families celebrating different holidays. \r\n\r\nAt the beginning of the year, we dedicated a section of our browser bins to be holiday books. The books that were purchased for this project have already been moved to this section. Our Halloween books are currently all checked out. Additionally, students have been so excited about other holiday books, they have also been checking out off-season holiday books. I have seen students get especially excited about seeing books about Ramadan. The plan is to continue to add holiday books to this section. I will be adding dividers and labels so students can more easily find books on the holidays they are looking for. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for your help and support!","fullyFundedDate":1746806626070,"projectUrl":"project/celebrate-your-big-day/9238773/","projectTitle":"Celebrate Your Big Day!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Walker","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9911856_orig.jpg?crop=960,960,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1738506068708","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9911856"},{"teacherId":9911856,"projectId":9106240,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donations to this project. The materials for this project have already helped students become more independent in finding books they want to read in our library. The bins have helped us organize the early readers and chapter book series. Chapter books, such as Junie B. Jones, Magic Treehouse, and Press Start, are now in their own bin. The bins are labeled with a picture of the character so students of all reading abilities are able to find them. The chapter book series have been circulating more because students are more easily able to find the books they are looking for. \r\n\r\nThe other materials have also helped with organization and helping students find books they want to read. The dividers were used to divide books in our multi-lingual collection. Students can now more easily find books that are in the languages they speak. I use the sign holders to show the different sections of our library and for displays. Currently, we have fall books as one of our displays. Students can find books in their favorite genres by looking at the signs too. The desktop reference is being used to show read-a-like lists. For example, I have suggestions of books for students who liked Dog Man books. Students very much enjoy flipping through it and looking for books they might want to read. I will continue adding and updating the lists. \r\n\r\nThank you again for your donation! Previously, the majority of our biographies were outdated and did not have very much interest for students. With this project, thanks to you, we were able to add 34 more current and diverse biographies to our collection. There is a huge impact of seeing someone who looks like you doing something you want to do. Students can read now read the biography of Yvonne Clark and know they can grow up to be an engineer or read about Tu Youyou and know they can grow up to be a scientist who helps treat diseases. Reading these books, students will be able to walk in someone else's shoes and know they can be whatever they want. \r\n\r\nOur school has already read some of these books and will continue to check them out. A student who just got new glasses was so excited to read George Washington's Spectacular Spectacles: The Glasses That Saved America and read about George Washington wearing glasses. As these books were being processed, a teacher saw them on my desk and immediately checked out the biography of George Takei and Dolly Parton. I usually do a display that is called \"Meet Someone New: Read a Biography.\" I am excited to highlight these books for staff and students in that display and all year. \r\n\r\nThe second purpose of these books was to do a biography project with fourth graders. I modeled the research process. We brainstormed questions about we would want to know when learning about a person. Students then took those questions, read their biography, took notes, then created a LEGO project to represent and share about their person. I was only able to do this with one class but I am hoping to make some tweaks and continue doing this project in the future. Thank you so much for making this project possible and helping add to our library collection!","fullyFundedDate":1738954454912,"projectUrl":"project/in-someone-elses-shoes-updating-the-bi/9087729/","projectTitle":"In Someone Else's Shoes: Updating the Biographies in Our Library","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Walker","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9911856_orig.jpg?crop=960,960,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1738506068708","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9911856"},{"teacherId":2331711,"projectId":8975969,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generous support in bringing a hydroponic garden to our classroom! This project has transformed how students engage with science and social studies, creating hands-on experiences that deepen their understanding of plant growth, nutrition, and the connections between hydroponic plants and the human body. From kindergarten through fifth grade, students have explored how plants grow without soil and how the hydroponic garden relates to different human body systems. For example, first graders learned about plant parts and their functions while connecting them to their own muscles. These real-world applications have made learning come alive in ways that traditional lessons cannot.\r\n\r\nThe excitement in my classroom was immediate from the moment students first saw the hydroponic system. Their eyes lit up with curiosity and anticipation as they watched the tiny seedlings begin to sprout. Each visit to the classroom is met with eager observations about the plants' progress, and students take turns monitoring and caring for them. When we harvested our first batch of greens, the enthusiasm only grew—one student even exclaimed, \"This tastes better than celery from the grocery store!\" Now, students are looking forward to harvesting strawberries and tomatoes, and their anticipation is building as they watch these plants mature.\r\n\r\nNext, we will continue to integrate the hydroponic garden into our lessons by expanding discussions on sustainable agriculture and nutrition. This project has sparked a deeper interest in science, curiosity about food sources, and an appreciation for fresh produce. Your contribution has made a lasting impact, and I cannot thank you enough for helping to create such a meaningful learning experience for my students!","fullyFundedDate":1733317845229,"projectUrl":"project/growing-minds-hydroponic-gardening-in-a/8975969/","projectTitle":"Growing Minds: Hydroponic Gardening in Action","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Edson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2331711_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1732849054258","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2331711"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_73865","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":469,"numTeachers":28,"percentFrplEligible":55,"percentAsian":11,"percentBlack":12,"percentWhite":52,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":9,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"16.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":72.5,"schoolId":73865,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Hoover Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Hoover Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/minnesota/anoka-hennepin-ind-sch-dist-11/hoover-elementary-school/73865"}
