Our school is a busy place with active elementary students. This means daily incidents happen requiring disposable items such as tissues and real paper towels (as opposed to the brown, hard roll paper towels). \r\nThe school district does not provide some of these items or better quality items. Sometimes parents are able to donate a box or two. But most of the time teachers and staff spend their own funds on these basic items - along with many other supplies for their classrooms. \r\nThe opportunity to be able to supply tissues for a majority of the school year means so much to the teachers and staff. Specifically the magna tiles and magna blocks. With the additional resources, more of my students are able to use the materials during our fine motor time. This helps them use their imaginations and to build different structures. \r\n\r\nThe lysol wipes help with our daily living skill of cleaning pur space. Each day we ask the students to wipe their desks and sweep or pick up trash around their area. The wipes are one of the ones deemed safe for students to use. My students have truly been enjoying the toys and tools they have been given and it has helped them make great progress on their goals. \r\n\r\nThe most popular items have been the sensory boxes and the toy food. The sensory boxes have provided many of my students (grades 1st through 5th) with a great way to take a sensory break. Most students on my caseload have autism, so these sensory boxes have helped them get their sensory needs met to help them stay focused for the next part of their school day. \r\n\r\nThe toy food has also been very popular. I have used the toy food with my students who are in the self-contained classroom, with more prominent needs. One specific child was able to use these toys to help me \"go grocery shopping\" during a pretend play session. I taught them the vocabulary words for the food, as well as the prepositions \"in\" and \"out\" during the play session. \r\n\r\nMy next plan is the use the space themed materials to help students learn their science vocabulary when they get to this unit in their science class. I have started working sequencing skills with some students (first, next, last) on the planet rug, but I plan to incorporate even more with the sensory box and rug once they start this lesson in science. \r\n\r\nThe students and I greatly appreciate the gifts you have provided us.
