Students have been using the ten frames, counters, linking cubes, and place value blocks to explore number sense, addition, and subtraction in hands-on ways. One of our favorite moments so far was during a \"Build a Number\" activity — students worked in pairs to model numbers using different manipulatives and then explained their thinking to the class. It was wonderful to see how proud they were to share their mathematical reasoning!\r\n\r\nThe excitement was immediate! When I opened the box, I heard a chorus of \"Wow!\" and \"Can we play with those?!\" They couldn't wait to dive in and explore. Many students commented on how the manipulatives helped them \"see\" the math better. For several students who typically struggle with abstract concepts, these tools have made math feel fun and understandable.\r\n\r\nWe're currently beginning a unit on place value, and the new manipulatives will be key in helping students understand tens and ones. Soon, students will use base-ten blocks to represent two-digit numbers, compare quantities, and even begin regrouping for addition and subtraction. Thanks to these new resources, they'll be able to build, move, and truly visualize math in a way that deepens understanding and confidence.","fullyFundedDate":1758343145157,"projectUrl":"project/counting-on-success-math-manipulatives/9371424/","projectTitle":"Counting on Success: Math Manipulatives for First Grade","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Gourlay","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3116206_orig.jpg?crop=161,161,x2,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1760620255005","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3116206"},{"teacherId":3116206,"projectId":9388829,"letterContent":"The addition of colorful construction paper has truly transformed our classroom. When the students first saw the stacks of bright paper, they gasped with excitement and immediately began brainstorming what they could create. The variety of colors sparked their imagination, and suddenly, ordinary lessons became opportunities for self-expression and creativity.\r\n\r\nWe've used the paper in countless ways—illustrating personal stories, designing posters to show what we've learned, and even experimenting with paper sculptures. One of my favorite moments was during writing time when students illustrated their own books. Having vibrant paper to work with gave their stories new life, and many of them proudly shared their finished projects with the class. It was incredible to see how something as simple as paper could inspire such pride and joy.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we plan to continue using this paper for seasonal projects, science diagrams, and collaborative displays in the classroom. Your generosity has provided more than just supplies—it has given my students the chance to be artists, storytellers, and designers every single day.
