Students could feel the excitement of a new classroom tool in the air. After our math lesson students began work time, and quickly the noise began to escalate as students began chatting. Although I am a strong supporter of a positive chatty class, there are times when work needs to be done. As soon as I handed out one pair of head phones the rest of the 4th grade came running. Soon my class became quiet. This silence brought pencils hard at work, and light bulbs going off in the room. \r\n\r\nIn the silence we find self discovery. The use of headphones is one that is newer to the classroom setting. The idea is that students who generally struggle with focus and attention are able to put the headphones on and block many of the distracting noises that come from the classroom. This way they are able to focus for a longer period of time to reinforce the material that has been taught. This also allows for students to have a \"quiet\" space to work where I can see them. Often times before I would have to send a student or two in the hall, which would often lead to classroom disputes!\r\n\r\nMy students are most excited to be able to use them using work time as well as free time. We had one pair of headphones in my classroom previously, and the sheer bliss of silence was something that all the students craved. Although they have an enormous impact on work time, they also have a positive impact on free time. Students with sensory needs are able to self regulate in the noise, and prevent overstimulation. Students also enjoy using them for reading as a way to listen to themselves in their own head uninterrupted. \r\n\r\nI have noticed several students who have typically cannot sit still due to noise are now able to sit for longer periods. Allowing them to sit in the silence makes it easier to focus on the task in front of them. I have also noticed that the students who usually retreat during free time, when it is especially loud in my classroom, are able to socialize with friends while maintaining a more comfortable volume level. \r\n\r\nIn just ONE hour my classroom has changed for the better. I can not truly express my gratefulness enough! As the year continues I hope to see a drastic increase in learning and retention! I am also hopefully for growth in self regulation and self management!","fullyFundedDate":1763673664328,"projectUrl":"project/in-the-quiet-we-find-self-discovery/9837610/","projectTitle":"In the Quiet We Find Self Discovery","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Servia","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10315704"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_67873","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":236,"numTeachers":19,"percentFrplEligible":68,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":91,"percentIndigenous":2,"percentLatinx":0,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"12.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":70.0,"schoolId":67873,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Wakefield Marenisco School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Wakefield Marenisco School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/wakefield-marenisco-school-district/wakefield-marenisco-school/67873"}
