I wish you could have seen the faces on each of my 6 ELA classes as well as my advisory!!! They were SHOCKED when they entered our classroom for the first time after I decorated it like the setting of Hatchet. Past students visit often to see the new set up and ask why they didn't have this when they were in 6th grade! haha. Word is spreading, and the kids are all about it!! \r\n\r\nHaving the room set up the way that it is makes all of us feel as though we are in the Canadian wilderness alongside Brian. There have been many instances where students have made connections from the book to the classroom environment: the porcupine scene, the moose scene, the way the lake is shaped on one of our tapestries in the room, Brian making a fire for the first time. I can't wait to see what other connections students make as we finish the second half of our novel study! \r\n\r\nI've been so impressed with how students take pride in this classroom set up, as well. They take good care of their tree stump seats and rock cushions, cleaning up after themselves each day. They really are grateful and do not take this gesture of kindness for granted! In addition, they named our cut-out moose \"Big Bertha\" after a very close class vote! \r\n\r\nOnce we finish our novel, students will have their own opportunity to assume the role of Brian to write a sequel chapter. Each student will \"find\" their own survival pack in a tin medic case in the classroom, and they will choose 5 items they can have with them on their survival journey. This will help them apply their reading comprehension skills from the novel to writing a narrative as their summative assessment for the unit! I can't wait to see what they come up with, especially as the woods and wilderness surround them in their writing process! \r\n\r\nThank you again so much for your support in making this a fun and interactive unit as we reach our ELA goals.","fullyFundedDate":1752116658836,"projectUrl":"project/hatchet-room-transformation/9429225/","projectTitle":"Hatchet - Room Transformation","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Brennan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8301444_orig.jpg?crop=480,480,x0,y150&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1643345221342","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/teambrennanela"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_71766","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":938,"numTeachers":55,"percentFrplEligible":25,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":85,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":6,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"17.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":85.3,"schoolId":71766,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Oxford Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Oxford Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/oxford-community-school-district/oxford-middle-school/71766"}
