When my students first saw the magnetic tiles, pop-it mats, and literacy games, they could not wait to get started. They were excited to play, but what made me even happier was seeing them use those materials to practice important reading and spelling skills without even realizing how much they were learning.\r\n\r\nMy students are using the materials to build, read, and spell CVC words while practicing how to hear, segment, blend, and connect sounds to letters. One of my favorite moments has been watching a student tap or pop each sound in a word, build it with the magnetic letters, and then proudly read the whole word. For students who often find reading difficult, those little moments of success are huge. The hands-on and tactile nature of these resources helps keep them engaged and gives them another way to make sense of the sounds and letters they are learning.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, my students now have engaging tools they can use again and again during small-group instruction, intervention, and independent practice. Our next step is to build on these foundational skills as we move into more complex word patterns and multisyllabic words. They can touch, move, say, and build sounds and words, making abstract reading skills more concrete and understandable. I have seen how powerful it can be when a student who has struggled suddenly realizes that they can do it.\r\n\r\nThese materials have also helped create more opportunities for students to practice without feeling like they are simply doing more work. Students are excited to use the tools, and that excitement helps build confidence and persistence. For students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties, having hands-on ways to work with sounds and words can provide the repetition and multisensory practice they need to strengthen their reading skills. Every successfully built word and decoded sound is a small step toward becoming a more confident reader.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, this project has helped me create a classroom where struggling readers feel successful, supported, and capable. Every day, students can use the sound wall to help connect the sounds they hear with what their mouths should actually be doing to make those sounds. The mouth visuals have been especially helpful for vowel sounds because students can see exactly how their lips, tongue, and mouth move. It has made phonics feel much more concrete and understandable for our young learners.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, they were beyond excited. They immediately wanted to practice sounds together, explore the mouth pictures, and dive into the new books. Many students were amazed at how different their mouths looked and felt for each sound, and they loved checking the visuals while practicing.\r\n\r\nThe books have also made a big difference because students are now reading texts that match the phonics skills they are learning. That success has helped many students feel proud of themselves as readers and more willing to take risks when reading new words.\r\n\r\nNext, we will continue using the sound wall every day during phonics lessons, small groups, and reading practice as students learn more advanced sounds and spelling patterns. Even students who typically struggle to stay on task were eager to try them out, and they quickly began to understand how these simple tools could support their thinking and help them do their best work.\r\n\r\nAs we continue using the dividers, our next step is helping students build stamina and independence during longer periods of focused work, especially in reading and writing. We are beginning to set personal goals and reflect on how well they are using their focus space and the strategies that help them stay engaged.
