For many students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, accessing books and preferred music can be a challenge. For some students, simply speaking to ask for a book or music that they want, is difficult. Many of my students are non verbal or minimally verbal and have a difficult time communicating basic needs let alone books or music about their preferred topics. Having our TonieBox gives them the freedom to select a Tonie character independently to listen to books. Additionally, it has been a big motivator for my students to learn to communicate more clearly. One of my kindergarten students who is minimally verbal has learned to say \"I want box\" to request the TonieBox when it is in the cabinet! This is a huge step for him. This student in particular, loves our TonieBox so much that we use the TonieBox as a reinforcer for doing his work or having good behavior!\r\n\r\nOne thing that is really exciting for my students is that the characters that were provided through donors choose are about their preferred topics. All kids are able to share the space comfortably and enjoy our monthly LEAD celebrations!\r\n\r\nWith the wall rolled out as they enter, kids are empowered to grab the tools they need to help them be at ease while we sing, dance, watch videos, and review brain science together.\r\n\r\nWatching kiddos become aware of their sensory needs as they shift from whole class to whole building is so neat. They are able to recognize sounds as overwhelming, and choose a way to regulate and remain in our whole group setting. The snacks have been a great help since so many of my students this year do not have their own snacks from home. My class is so excited to have multiple choices of items to pick for snack. All the items have made a large impact in my students this year and will continue to make an impact for future classrooms.
