This experimental equipment allowed us to move beyond diagrams in a textbook and dive into a hands-on lab titled \"The 'Juice' of Life — Exploring Energy Transformation\". My students were tasked with transforming chemical potential energy from everyday fruits into electrical kinetic energy to power digital clocks and LEDs. It was amazing to see them realize that the same science powering their phones and homes, could be replicated using a tomato and a few metal sheets.\r\n\r\nThe highlight of the project was undoubtedly the \"Human Battery\" warm-up. My students were skeptical when I told them they could power a clock using nothing but their own hands. I watched a group of students huddle around a digital clock, holding the copper and zinc sheets tightly. When the clock display flickered to life using the sweat on their palms as the electrolyte, the room erupted in cheers. One student shouted, \"I'm literally electric!\" That moment of pure discovery—seeing them realize that energy transfer is happening everywhere, even within themselves—is a memory that will stick with them far longer than any lecture.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we are using these kits to explore the energy transfer and generators in more depth. The students are currently troubleshooting why some fruits, like tomatoes, provide a stronger current than others due to their higher ion content. They've even learned the importance of equipment maintenance, carefully rinsing and drying their metal sheets to prevent corrosion so the \"potential energy\" is preserved for our next experiment. \r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students the tools to see the world through the lens of a scientist; your investment has truly impacted our classroom in a positive way.\r\nWith gratitude,","fullyFundedDate":1763563968574,"projectUrl":"project/ions-batteries-and-electron-transfer/9864273/","projectTitle":"Ions, Batteries, and Electron Transfer","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Brent","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10335608"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_32236","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":184,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":21,"percentWhite":48,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":20,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":61.5,"schoolId":32236,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Grand Rapids Montessori High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Grand Rapids Montessori High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/grand-rapids-public-school-district/central-high-school-ninth-grade-academy/32236"}
