A classroom of inspiration creates opportunity for students to see, feel, hear and experience not just what is, but what can be. My classroom I often hear students is an inviting space. As a history teacher, I am humbled by that comment, largely because I believe I have the toughest \"sell\" of any of the four core disciplines. In a world where we are driven by STEM ideas, which are all wonderful, the Social Studies/Sciences and History in general, are often the most difficult \"sell\" in high school. I have always felt that if you could hook kids and pique their interest, you might be able to connect them to the topic at hand with a good story.\r\n\r\nVexillology, the study of flags has been made more popular most recently with an influx of great teaching apps. These discreet learning tools encourage students to study up on flags, the origins, size, shape, colors and representations and graphic art to understand the nation's messaging, often in a 3' x 5' feet flag. By having now these massive flowing sets of flags in our room, students can be looking, thinking and engaging with the International Flags that they may come in contact with some day.\r\n\r\nAs a young person I traveled little in a geographic sense, but I would travel the world in my set of World Book Encyclopedias. As a third grader, my parents bought a full set and I was in heaven. I would paw through those books looking and reading and every volune on a quiet afternoon was a chance to go someplace new, and learn something different. Those volumes were my window to the world in the early 1980s long before the internet age. I often came to flags under \"F\" and would imagine going to some of these far off places. Now my own students can imagine in the same fashion. \r\n\r\nAdding these flags to my room, brought smiles to my regular education students, and then in our first delegation meeting with our full Model United Nations Delegations- the students were totally impressed. Additionally the gavels and sounding blocks were top flight. I took the last step and had the brass band around the hammer of the gavels engraved with \" DEXTER HIGH SCHOOL MODEL UNITED NATIONS\" SO THAT when we host our own conference, rooms will see we are \"professional grade.\"\r\n\r\nI was introduced to Donor's Choose by one of my very best friends growing up. He articulated the power of an earnest ask by teachers for support of their opportunities to put a \"cherry on top\" of their classroom teaching/learning opportunities. He said there were \"angel investors\" of sorts willing and able to take care of classrooms and students who were doing extraordinary things. He was right, there are tremendous benefactors and patrons of education such as you and I am thankful. My students feel the same way.\r\n\r\nPlease enjoy the pictures of the Model UN Delegation as an extension of our appreciation. We thank you again for your support of our Model United Nations Club and the spirit of support for International Education.","fullyFundedDate":1734211673173,"projectUrl":"project/model-united-nations-global-education-in/8883895/","projectTitle":"Model United Nations-Global Education In Action!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Dudash","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9805612"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_72913","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1053,"numTeachers":66,"percentFrplEligible":11,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":91,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"16.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":0.0,"schoolId":72913,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Dexter High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Dexter High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/dexter-community-school-district/dexter-high-school/72913"}
