My students are deaf and hard of hearing. They do not often have the opportunity to read books that have characters that are like them. Your gift of these books has already made such a positive impact on my students. To watch them look through the books and see that each one has deaf characters or is about hearing loss and see the smiles come across their faces is priceless. For the middle school and high school students specifically, this matters. They finally feel seen. They don't feel so isolated.\r\n\r\nThese students may not always remember that it was your generosity that allowed them the opportunity to read books with characters that represent them, but they will ALWAYS remember the way they felt when reading the books.\r\n\r\nThank you, thank you, thank you. My students have been able to use these STEM items on a daily basis and absolutely love them! One of the most recent endeavors for the students have been to guess the smell. Each week we try a different number set, and then we discuss what each smell reminds us of. From fresh grass to fruity cleaning products - it's been a fun activity that all of the students have enjoyed. It's an easy way to focus on science based learning, and practicing the steps of forming hypothesis and checking our work, and repeating again and again.\r\n\r\nThe added bonus has been the uptick in communication and the willingness of the students to be completely involved in discussion and dissection of each topic we bring to the table. These STEM activities have brought joy and intrigue to students who tell me they tend to not like science. These make it fun for everyone again! I work with students in all the grades k-12, and ALL of them love when I bring these out! Thank you for making learning fun for our students who are struggling. The Lakeshore Reading materials and kits have been a huge hit with my students. They are having so much fun they don't even know they are learning.\r\n\r\nFor students with hearing loss, language deprivation has a huge impact on their ability to acquire language, which in turn has a global impact on their reading, writing and math skills. My students struggle in all of these areas daily. School can be a very frustrating experience. Your generosity has helped them see that learning can be fun and, more importantly, they CAN be successful in reading.\r\n\r\nThe first day I brought the games in, they were all very interested in what I had. I am an itinerant teacher and this year my students are kindergarten through 12th grade. I picked a game for each of them to play. So far we have been having a blast playing the games for cause and effect, capitalization and punctuation, and grammar. These are all VERY difficult skills for my students. As a matter of fact, when they saw the topics, they were all very nervous. However, once we started playing, all of the nervousness went away, and they had fun. They were so proud when they were able to answer the questions correctly. Even when they didn't know an answer, using the games provided a non-pressurized situation for us to be able to have a discussion and figure out the correct answer. I had several of my students comment that they were surprised that they knew more than they thought they did. Each of them walked away from our sessions feeling PROUD. I even had parents contact me to let me know that their child went home talking about how awesome they had done at a reading game and that had never happened before.\r\n\r\nI could not give my students these experiences if it were not for your kindness and generosity. Your donations to my project made such a positive impact on them. They are all looking forward to exploring all of the games I have.","fullyFundedDate":1729808508108,"projectUrl":"project/reading-skills-for-deaf-and-hard-of-hear/8705965/","projectTitle":"Reading Skills for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lonsway","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9708147"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_101757","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":62,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":90,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":4,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Weighted Average","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":63.6,"schoolId":101757,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Clare-Gladwin Career Tech Center on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Clare-Gladwin Career Tech Center","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/clare-public-schools/clare-gladwin-career-tech-center/101757"}
