This project is going to help my classroom literacy so much. When the boxes of graphic novels started to arrive at the school, my 1st hour class of 7th graders got so excited. I let them open the boxes and then they saw all the graphic novels with the titles they requested. \"This is better than Christmas morning!\" shouted one 7th grade boy. Another 7th grade boy shouted out, \"Best day ever!\" One of the girls exclaimed, \"Look how many Babysitters Club books we got. Can I start reading right now? They're my favorite.\"\r\n To say these graphic novels sparked joy in the life of my students is an understatement. All they want to do is read. One 8th grade boy, who loves sports, has been devouring the sports graphic novels like \"Hoop Rat\" and \"End Zone Thunder\". Another student fell in love with the Minecraft book. There were a couple of surprises, when 2 students were completely won over by the graphic novels of \"Super Pancake\" and \"Waffles and Pancake: Failure to Lunch\". Also, one student, who was rather grumpy that day and proclaimed that he didn't see \"any book he liked\", was found over in the bean bag chair, laughing and chortling over the graphic novel, \"Bad Kitty Gets a Phone\". \r\n Thank you, from the bottom of our middle school hearts, for the lovely graphic novels you help fund for my special education class. Your gift of biographical graphic novels has profoundly impacted my middle school students who receive special education services. For many of them, traditional, text-heavy books were intimidating, and even though they are curious and creative, they often shied away from reading. Your donation changed that. These graphic novels have completely revitalized our reading time, filling our classroom with engaged discussion and newfound confidence. This project wasn't just about adding new books; it was about making nonfiction accessible and exciting for students from historically underfunded households, a powerful investment in their equity and learning.\r\n Beyond just making reading more enjoyable, these books have introduced my students to new skills and ways of thinking. The combination of clear text and vibrant visuals has improved their visual literacy and their ability to make inferences, skills that are often challenging for them. Watching students like Lucas and Caleb actively process information and share their excitement for learning with their peers has been a truly joyful experience. Your support has shown them that they, too, can be successful readers and that their love for visual storytelling is valid and powerful.\r\n\r\n.","fullyFundedDate":1760204289955,"projectUrl":"project/inspiring-lives-through-graphic-novels/9791453/","projectTitle":"Inspiring Lives Through Graphic Novels","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Scott","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1508283_orig.jpg?crop=629,629,x0,y90&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1759581052009","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1508283"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_70873","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":612,"numTeachers":36,"percentFrplEligible":94,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":57,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":29,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"17.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":93.3,"schoolId":70873,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Springbrook Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Springbrook Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/adrian-public-schools/adrian-middle-school-7-8/70873"}
