My students love the new rug, and the flexible seating has been a welcome addition to my small group room! When the kids first saw the rug, the chairs, and the lap desks, they all wanted to use them immediately! We worked to create a rotating flexible seating chart so everyone gets regular turns getting to do work on our \"cool new chairs!\"\r\n\r\nOur district is implementing a very rigorous new literacy curriculum this year, and it requires a lot of sitting for students. While we do the core lessons in the classroom, I pull students for instruction that supports the core content. I pull 6 first grade students every afternoon, as well as 3 second grade students every morning after our literacy block. They are VERY wiggly, and the ability to move around on the rug has been crucial for them to maintain attention. Kids get to lay down on the rug to draw, write, or look at a book; we get to do movement breaks and spread out; and kids who have difficulty sitting in a chair at the table have the option of sitting in our chairs. Working in my room has become more fun, and most definitely more motivating, all thanks to a rug and some comfy seating! \r\n\r\nWe are so grateful for the generosity of the donors. I have explained to the students where our new materials came from, and they were really excited to write their thank you notes. It is especially important to help these English language learners--some of the most vulnerable students--love school and feel successful, especially now. Knowing that there are people out there who value their education as much as their teachers and families do is an incredible affirmation of the work I do, and lets the kids know that they are supported.
