Some of our kiddos need movement to focus, others need a quieter environment, and some benefit from sensory input to help them feel grounded. Having these tools available allows us to meet our students where they are instead of expecting every child to fit into the same mold. We are especially excited that our students have more choices and opportunities to recognize what their bodies need and begin advocating for themselves. We are using the tennis balls on the bottoms of our chairs every day, and they have made a noticeable difference in reducing the loud scraping noises that used to happen whenever students moved. This simple change has helped create a quieter learning environment where students can better focus on reading, writing, and math activities. For students who are sensitive to sound, especially those with sensory needs, the reduced noise has helped them feel more relaxed and ready to participate in lessons.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the tennis balls on the chairs, they were excited and curious about how something so small could make such a big difference. They immediately noticed how much quieter the classroom felt, and many commented that it helped them concentrate better during independent work and small group instruction. The tennis balls have also helped students move their chairs more smoothly, allowing for easier transitions between activities throughout the day.\r\n\r\nAs we continue working on foundational first-grade skills such as guided reading, writing workshops, and collaborative math activities, the quieter environment is helping students stay engaged for longer periods of time.
