We are using the tennis balls on the bottoms of our chairs every day, and they have made a noticeable difference in reducing the loud scraping noises that used to happen whenever students moved. This simple change has helped create a quieter learning environment where students can better focus on reading, writing, and math activities. For students who are sensitive to sound, especially those with sensory needs, the reduced noise has helped them feel more relaxed and ready to participate in lessons.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the tennis balls on the chairs, they were excited and curious about how something so small could make such a big difference. They immediately noticed how much quieter the classroom felt, and many commented that it helped them concentrate better during independent work and small group instruction. The tennis balls have also helped students move their chairs more smoothly, allowing for easier transitions between activities throughout the day.\r\n\r\nAs we continue working on foundational first-grade skills such as guided reading, writing workshops, and collaborative math activities, the quieter environment is helping students stay engaged for longer periods of time. Your support has helped create a more supportive and inclusive classroom space where all students can feel comfortable, focused, and ready to learn. They quickly made it part of our routine—sitting together for morning meetings, listening to read-alouds, and working in small groups. Having a defined space makes transitions smoother and helps everyone settle in more quickly.\r\n\r\nThe rug has also become a learning tool. Because it's a giant world map, we've already used it to practice locating the continents and talking about places we read about in books. For my students with sensory needs, the soft surface helps them stay comfortable and engaged, while for the whole class, it gives us a common spot to focus and learn together.\r\n\r\nThis project may seem simple, but it's had a real impact on our classroom. Thank you for helping us rebuild this important part of our learning space.","fullyFundedDate":1750107354781,"projectUrl":"project/a-fresh-start-replacing-our-classroom-r/9352558/","projectTitle":"A Fresh Start: Replacing Our Classroom Rug","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Graham","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2022669_orig.jpg?crop=1729,1729,x424,y1219&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1733413391819","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/missmcallister"},{"teacherId":2022669,"projectId":9286501,"letterContent":"Thanks to your support, our classroom has been transformed with the addition of our Living Plant Corner! When the wire shelf, grow lights, and boot trays arrived, my students were absolutely buzzing with excitement. They helped unpack every item with care and couldn't wait to decide which plants would go where. One student said, \"It's like we're running a plant hospital AND a jungle!\"\r\n\r\nWe've been using the space to care for a variety of plants, learn about their needs, and take on rotating \"Plant Crew\" roles like Water Warrior and Leaf Librarian. The grow lights allow us to keep our plants thriving even without direct sunlight, and the boot trays protect our classroom floors—because yes, 3rd grade enthusiasm sometimes means a little extra water.\r\n\r\nThis space has quickly become a favorite part of our day. Students calm down while misting the leaves or checking soil, and it's sparked so many science conversations—everything from plant adaptations to photosynthesis to humidity levels. We'll continue observing growth, tracking plant progress, and using our corner to learn about ecosystems all year long!","fullyFundedDate":1746442599292,"projectUrl":"project/growing-minds-our-classroom-plant-corne/9286501/","projectTitle":"Growing Minds: Our Classroom Plant Corner","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Graham","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2022669_orig.jpg?crop=1729,1729,x424,y1219&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1733413391819","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/missmcallister"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_60669","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":369,"numTeachers":29,"percentFrplEligible":70,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":64,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":22,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"12.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":90.6,"schoolId":60669,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Samuel Brown Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Samuel Brown Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/massachusetts/peabody-public-school-district/samuel-brown-elementary-school/60669"}
