We listed ways that we have become a family in our classroom. They even asked me to reread the book several times. So they were shocked when we gave each of them their own copy of the book!\r\n\r\nI explained to them that there were some wonderful people who donated these books to us. We had done our first Donor's Choose early that year for some books written by an author we had a visit with. They learned what it meant to have donations made so we could have those books donated to our class library. So when we talked about the donations made so each of them could have their own copy of \"Our Class is a Family,\" they completely knew what it meant to have them donated. They jumped with joy and were so excited they could share them with their families and even keep them!\r\n\r\nWe also spent one morning signing each others books. Some students grasped the concept right away and being 5 and 6 years old some thought they needed to write other students names in each other's books. It was too cute to see and this is why we use pencil! Once everyone got going they were excited to sign and ask for signatures. I explained they can always read all their friends and teachers names from who was in their class that year.\r\n\r\nI have a copy of the book myself and I plan to start the school year off reading this story now. Then we can revisit it throughout the year and see how our family has grown. Hopefully make it a yearly tradition to give each student a copy at the end of the year with everyone's signatures.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your supportive donations!","fullyFundedDate":1744210643651,"projectUrl":"project/our-class-is-a-family-we-will-never-forg/9244497/","projectTitle":"Our Class is a Family We Will Never Forget!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Criasia","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9736740_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725768764372","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9736740"},{"teacherId":9736740,"projectId":8749928,"letterContent":"We are so extremely thankful for your donations! I explained that some very special people purchased these books for us to use and enjoy.\r\n\r\nMy students who speak other languages and whose families are from other countries LOVED to see books related to their lives. Their eyes lit up when seeing books about: Haiti, Brazil, Ecuador, India and many more. ALL the students will benefit from learning about other cultures and communities. \r\n\r\nThere are also several social-emotional books with wonderful lessons in them. I will use these books to create activities for the students. We spend a lot of time in kindergarten working on feelings and emotions. \r\n\r\nI am so thrilled I will always have these books in my library to use for lessons and activities each year.","fullyFundedDate":1732632484739,"projectUrl":"project/embracing-who-we-are-through-culturally/8749928/","projectTitle":"Embracing Who We Are Through Culturally Responsive Literature","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Criasia","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9736740_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725768764372","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9736740"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_47315","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":578,"numTeachers":41,"percentFrplEligible":76,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":48,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":42,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 2","studentTeacherRatio":"14.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":75.7,"schoolId":47315,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Brookside Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Brookside Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/massachusetts/milford-public-school-district/brookside-elementary-school/47315"}
