Each time a box was delivered, I opened it with my class and we talked about the ways to use the new materials and we talked about how lucky we are to have generous people donate the toys to our class. We received so many wonderful items and started using them right away during our daily free choice time and on indoor recess days. My class has been building construction sites with the magnitile construction vehicles sets. The most popular center is the pizza shop we created in our class, complete with pizza oven. Soon we will change out the pizza shop for a post office, farmer's market, diner and bakery. Having these toys has allowed my students more opportunities to grow socially and emotionally as well as to expand their vocabulary, reading, writing and math skills. At the end of a busy day of reading, writing and math lessons, playing at free choice time is when the students put together everything they have learned and they get to have fun with friends. Isn't that what kindergarten is all about? We use the letter center kits in the afternoon for center time. They offer each child their own manipulatives, which helps with both student learning and behavior at center time.
