In PreK, reading is about so much more than just the story. We look at the pictures, talk about the characters and their feelings, learn new words, ask lots of questions, and make connections to our own lives. The new books have given us so many opportunities to talk about different families, cultures, languages, and what makes each of us special.\r\n\r\nWe read all day long, whether in circle, in small groups, during quiet time, and whenever a child grabs a book and brings it over to a friend or teacher. I especially love watching the children find characters they connect with. Some of my students love seeing children who look like them, while others get so excited when they hear Spanish words and want to try saying them, too. One of my students last year said, \"I like that book because the character looks just like me,\" and I never forgot it. That little comment is what inspired me to create this project.
